Default fitting lower fairings

I added lowers to my RK, and love the way they look, but I'm not at all satisfied with how they fit. It's close, but just not perfect. I've tried several times to get the gap consistent between the two pieces on both fairings, and I just can't seem to get it even or aligned perfectly. I've tried washers (shims) and adding strips of rubber (cut from an old innertube) to change the way the two parts fit, but I'm having no luck. What's the trick guys? Any ideas?

They are factory HD vented lowers, and the crash bar they are going on is also factory ('03). Probably no one is ever going to notice but me, but it just bothers me that the gap is off a little.

(you really can't tell from this photo. I'll take close-ups tonight to show what I mean)

My understanding is you have to tighten the lowers in a small increments..........Meaning you tighten each bolt a small amount so you make sure you pull the pieces together evenly.

This is what I was told...........Have yet to take the lowers off my Ultra.

Dammit..here's what's going to happen....
You're going to post pics of what you're talking about and then I'm gonna go out and look at my RGU. Then I'll notice what you're talking about on my bike and then it'll bug me too!!!!

If you haven't done so already, loosen the bottom clamp so you can move the Lower fairing a bit and then fit the cap.

If you ever see a bike with perfect spacing between cap and lower, take a pic and post it 'cause I've looked after doing my own and never found one.

I just stopped in at the local dealer & checked out the new bikes. They fit better, but not perfect. The "cap" is almost flush against the main part of the lower & there is a significant gap on the bottom. It's all even, and consistent with every bike I saw on the showroom floor, but the bottom definitely had more gap than the top or sides.

I'll loosen the bottom clamp and try again, in small increments, as suggested. I know it will just be a process of trial & error.

... and MikeB, I'll get you those photos ASAP! lol!

They never fit flush. The best you will do is make the gap uniform.

Good luck.

Carl

PS--it's like the seams on cars. Not flush, but uniform.

Mine were loose as heck aslo. They are of course genuine products bought for my RK and the best way I could figure out how to get them even was double sided tape stuck in the channel of them which goes againest the crash bar, (I left the protective cover on one side of the tape of course).
