My buddy SG stopped on him yesterday. The bike came to coast but the clutch is inoperable. The bike at that time started, you could shift through the gears but the the clutch lever was stiff. later on we tried to adjust the clutch to which didn't get us know where. now the starter turns and will not engage. any help on this one is appreciated..... a brief history we had to adjust the clutch on his SG before and it ran fine.
he has stock cables. One time the bike will only move in first barely. after taking off the primary cover plate we smelled a burnt smell. I adjust the clutch and the bike ran ok. but he does drive it hard. the cable adjustment up by the front wheel only have about 1/2 in between the adjustmet bolt.
A "buddy's bike" , starter turns but won't engage, adjusted the clutch and it ran fine, hmmmm a proper service manual might be a good place to start reworking
assume that the clutch is ok and that only proper adjustment is needed- after that if still no good, then the clutch needs to be dis-assembled and disks need to be inspected.
as above the manual has all the pertinent info.
the "clutch" adjustment is behind the derby cover...the cable is then adjusted ( from slack) to adjust the lever pull...first one, then the other. either out of proper adjustment will result in problems.

Firstoff the cable adjust isn't the correct point to adjust the clutch, that is behind the derby cover and is a allen screw in center of clutch with locknut on it. If he has added clutch free play at the cable then it is probably cooked.
By adjusting the clutch at the derby, you are extending or reducing the length of the push rod. This allows for the gap between the plates to increase or decrease. By adjusting the clutch on the cable, you are taking up the slack of the lever. If you over tighten the cable it will result in slippage. You can adjust the cable all day, but if the pushrod is not adjusted correctly she wont wanna play ball.
By your post it looks like your buddy has a 2012 streetglide and by your stlyamaha name I assume your a metric rider.? If you misadjust a clutch by lack of proper info. and knowledge it doesn't take long to cook a clutch by slippage. If is a 2012 and hasn't been tampered with, it should be under warranty if you can find a dealer to call it a defect and not a wear item or abuse.
Derekj hit the nail on the head. You have to look at it as two separate things. first you get the clutch adjusted correctly. Then you adjust the cable. The cable is just the linkage to operate the clutch.
