Like the rest, glad you and the wife are ok. I suppose it is the price we all pay for riding motorcycles. All of us cannot be too careful. Had the something happen to me but avoided the collision thanks to ABS. They never see us until its too late.

Glad to hear you two are okay! Don't worry about the bike, a little time and insurance money and she will be back to new. The same thing just happened to my buddy a couple of months ago (yes, we can ride in January here in Cali). He ended up getting a sweet ghost flame paint job.

Yesterday morning my wife and I loaded up the Ultra Limited, for a 355 mile trip to visit family in Lynchburg, Va. The bike 1,300 miles new, just purchased in November. On our route, less than a mile from home. We were passing our high school campus, with tons of traffic because of a wrestling tournament. As we moved closer to the school, cars were parked on both sides of the road. A small SUV we had been traveling behind for over half a mile moves over to the right, and appears to be stopping at the crosswalk to let someone out. We move to the left portion of our lane, then suddenly they turn hard left right into our path. Thank god we were not moving fast, but we were not able to avoid a collision, and hit her squarely in the drivers door. She rolled down her window, and asked if we were OK, I asked someone to call an ambulance, since I could see blood dripping on my fuel tank.

I set my jiffy stand down, and my wife got off the back, and called the 911, and asked for an ambulance and police. The women driving the SUV says I must not have seen her turn signal that she was making an illegal U-Turn to park in a spot open on the opposite side of the road. A few witnesses step forward and said she did not have her signal on, and I was not doing anything dangerous. An ambulance arrived, and EMTs started to check me out, and asked if my wife had any injuries. I had a 2 inch laceration below my nose to my upper lips, likely going to leave a scar.

Needless to say I was not happy, but did not go ballistic since my wife was OK. At one point I was expressing my displeasure with the enforcement of traffic laws(Illegal U-Turns, and basic disregard for basic safety) of our local law enforcement officers. The officer didn't even dispute, my statements, and more or less told me he didn't have time to stop people for making U-Turns in the middle of busy roads, parking illegally, or making standing U-Turns from parking spaces. Monday I plan on speaking to our local chief of police, and ask him to make his officers more aware of more than just writing tickets at easy speed traps.

I was taken via ambulance to the local emergency room. No concussion (wearing a helmet), but has a pretty nice laceration on my upper lip. ER Dr put nine small stitches in to help keep the scaring to a minimum. Today looks like I have a fat lip with stitches in it. But gonna have a scar.

I called my dealer, and they arrived with an hour to take the bike. As low speed as the collision was, the damage to the bike looks extensive. The tab for the engine guard is slightly bent. Fairing, inner fairing, lower fairing, fender, engine guard, and some things I didn't even have time to take in are damaged. Talked to the service manager, and he told me he would get the painted parts on order yesterday in order to speed up the process.

I have spoken to my insurance company, and her insurance company. The police officer told me she is being cited for the U-turn, but I didn't get the chance to press him for much else. I talked to her adjuster, and he called her saying she didn't dispute any of the facts that I presented, and was waiting on the accident report. He said he will be out to see me first thing Monday morning. Debating on calling an attorney, but not going to sign anything without speaking to one first. I know I want a rental bike since this is clearing not my fault, and this is my primary form of transportation at this time of year.

I will post pictures when I can. Having trouble at the moment.
Glad you are O.K. If I read your story right you might end up being half at fault. It sounds like you were passing the car in the same lane they were in, just because they moved over to the right side of the lane doe not mean you can pass them in the same lane. Maybe different where you live but here where I am I would be found partially at fault. If the car had not done a uturn and had just proceeded you would have been 100% at fault. I do hope it works out for you.

ARE YOU SOME KIND OF CRIME SCENE RECONSTRUCTION EXPERT????

They pulled to the right toward or out of the lane, in an area people normally drop students off at a walkway towards the school. We slowed, moving towards the left portion of the lane, then suddenly they turn in front of us. I was riding cautiously!!! Had she given any indication she was going to make any turn(even an illegal u-turn), we would have stopped. If we wouild have been traveling any faster, my wife and I would have been thrown from the motorcycle. Multiple witnesses agree I was doing nothing dangerous, and the police cited the operator of the SUV. There insurance adjuster said she is not disputing any of the facts. But you would like to come on here and twist something I have to say.

Sure you can place some of the blame with me. Maybe for pulling the bike out of my garage, putting on my leather, helmet, goggle, and gloves, then getting on a road that has people in cages? Cages that don't give a damn what is going on around them!!! Maybe tuning on the bike, starting it, putting the transmission in gear, and turning the throttle? Maybe having ESP would have prevented this from occurring?

We all assume there will be risk riding a motorcycle. But penalties need to be suitable for careless drivers. I will share what my outcome is with those interested, and possibly someone can avoid a similar situation. But police need to enforce simple safety rules, instead of just turning a blind eye because they are the only one on duty, and MAY need to respond to something else.

Many of US, are tired of being treated like second class motorists. We deserve as much protection from the law as anyone else.

It'd be wrong to say the other driver wasn't at fault, but remember all the old tales about "I didn't see him"? Well, this is why we have to be better than the other driver. You got off light. A little faster, a little closer, a little less luck & your bike could be total or you or your wife could be dead. The amount of damage to that door wasn't really "low" speed. It wasn't fast, but it shows you weren't watchin' for someone doin' something stupid. They got you! It's good that you got off as light as you did, but I hope you learn from the accident.

I like the fact that I have ABS too, but.........

ABS is I double edged sword!

Today while riding with my GF two-up.............dropped the bike.
I was riding about 35-40 mph in the center lane and a car that had been in the left lane pulled ahead into the center lane about 30' in front of me. About 40' in front of the car is an intersection and the light just turns yellow.

This idiot decides to slam on the brakes and make a hard stop. I saw it coming and hit both brakes hard.......I've only got 30'! ABS kicks in immediately.
Oh, forgot to mention the Jeep directly behind me!!

About 10' from the rear bumper of the idiot cager I realize this beast ain't gonna stop in time!! I didn't have time to check my mirror for someone or the Jeep in the left lane but didn't have much choice......I dove the bike toward the left lane and miss the left rear corner of the car by a foot or so and come to a stop alongside the drivers door of the car. Problem was the bike came to a stop as I was leaning left and I couldn't hold the weight of the bike, me and my passenger.

I did manage to lay it down pretty gently considering the circumstance. Luckily nobody was in my way in the left lane. The Jeep locked 'em up and dove into the right lane. The guy driving the Jeep runs over within seconds to help get the bike up and off my girlfriend's calf and foot, it was pinned under the left saddlebag when we fell over. The moron in the car never got out or helped.....hell he never even rolled down the window or acknowledged anything!! By the time I got the bike up, got back mounted up with my passenger, in the front of a very busy intersection, the light turns green and everyone proceeds on about their business. I couldn't get the bike started the first two or three attempts, so all of the traffic in the left lane behind me just drives on around me. No one could care less as they drove by two feet from me, the bike and my passenger!!

Completely uncaring and brainless morons are roaming the streets of the USA by the millions!!!

As for the Steed......man o man did I get lucky or what?
The only thing that ultimately touched the ground was..........
My left rear floorboard mounting bracket ( I have Harley Goodies extensions )
My left side muffler at the rear of the pipe
The front fairing right at the curve in front of the left handlebar grip
And my girlfriend's left leg ( thank goodness the saddlebag didn't touch! )

When I got home, thirty miles later, I took a microfiber towel and wiped down the front fairing. I could barely find the hairline scratch in the clear coat. I took some boot mark remover and soaked the left muffler where the small chunk of melted asphalt was stuck to the pipe. Came right off after soaking for 5 minutes.

The floorboard extenders, and my GF's leg, kept anything else from touching the ground! Not even the crash bars or the highway pegs extending out from them!
Thank God for Floorboard extenders,lol.

Guess what everyone says IS true.....
It isn't IF you will ever drop your bike, but WHEN you WILL drop your bike!
Just make sure you lay her down gently on your woman's leg!!
Well, I better go now. I gotta go and kiss her booboo and make it better

The bike weighs over 1300lbs, loaded 2 up up. My wife weighs 128, and I am 235. So the amount of damage to her door is about what I expected. I guess you are some expert as well. It was "low" speed, unless you are calling me a liar?

You arr correct we got off light. Any faster, even slighly faster, my wife and I could have been hospitalized. Even the driver would have been injures. If I was in my car, which does not stop as quickly, the driver would have been seriously injured.

Yes I learned from this, just like I hoped to pass along my tale so someone else can learn. That my wife is more important that she is Ok, and a motorcycle will always be second. And we as riders must be more cautious of idiots.

I don't think he meant by it. Low is a relative term. For some people, low means 5 mph, some people it means 30 mph. For some people it means 5 mph under the speed limit.
