signing on the thread - 2012 has made a low "clatter" for about the last 1000 miles (right at 5k on it now) - reminds me of a noisy lifter..............

Hard to beat those old 300 Ford and 292 Chevy 6's, those rods take some abuse, bottom ends are bullet proof. Got the 292 in my 63 truck, 15 yr old grandson just learned how to drive the manual shift 2 weeks ago. Good thing he had that torqy 292 to help him learn the clutch part although he did manage to kill it a couple times taking off on a hill...
When you have a non floating pin in the connect rod end you do not have a bushing. It's simple metal to metal, and I mean hydraulic press fit. That is why Harley has used free floating pins with retainers. About a year ago I rebuilt a 22R in son's 89 4x4. It had been tapping off and on for about 3 years and started to do it all the time loud. Just in the back cylinder. First I though it was a bad rocker arm but to get them off require breaking head bolts since they are in a cradle. Finally had no choice since I then thought it was a rod. Turned out to be the pin bushing and one had been starving for oil from all the trash in motor from two broken chain guides on the timing chain. The back one had about .004 clearance. Sounded like it was going to blow up. I pressed in new sleeves and roller burnished them for a slip fit on the pin on my drill press. Put it all back together with new rings. 190K and it sounds new.

The rod in my attachment is a non bushing press fit pin out of a 4 cylinder iron duke GM that was in a lot of front wheel drive cars back in the 90s. It had overheated from a stuck thermostat. I rebuilt it totally. After it over heated, it would start knocking after it warmed up. I discovered the piston on this rod had been slanted in the cylinder since new. When it overheated it warped the cylinder a little and when it heated up it was dragging on piston. It also put hairline cracks in the cast iron heads. The long scratch marks are were I pressed out pin, but most were already there from were GM pressed in in when new. That circular area is were the bore did not clean up when GM machined it. They sure missed this one but it never made a sound for 100K till it overheated.

Very similar to the mileage timing of when my issue started. Your sound description matches what I am hearing as well. It is just more constant now kind of like the sound the spinning wheel on "Wheel of Fortune" makes if the clicker thing was metal.

since about 5.5k the noise has been at every startup. at first I missed it since I usually pull the bike out, crank it and walk back into the garage and let it warm up for a few minutes. I always heard a little clattering on startup but with the 12 inch yaffes and the poly riser bushings I always thought I was hearing the clutch lever rattling, which I was, but that wasn't all it was. now it's very obviously an engine noise. had the comp changed last time I bitched about it at about 6k miles and was told that it was wearing excessively. sounded good when I picked it up but it was warm and I only hear the knock on startup when cold. it sounds like rod knock in any other engine but it seems to sound like it's in the bottom end of the motor from the front of the primary. I guess final teardown will reveal the true culprit once and for all.

Did you ever find out what was causing your knock?

I had a problem in my '12. Ended up finding some metal fragments in the motor. Harley sent them a fresh engine to replace it. Was at about 10,000 miles.

They were very fair about it. Promised me nothing until they looked inside it with a scope. Believe it was with a certain run of motors.

Still have some top end noise. Got rid of it by removing cats. Now just loud enought to not hear the valve noise, but quiet enough for freeway cruising.
