The only way to remove the rear "crash" bar on a RK is to go to the Street Glide type saddlebag support. You can buy a kit to do this that will fit with the current crash bar set up if you have an 08 or earlier RK, that kit isn't available yet for the 09 and newer bikes. If you are talking about the rear chrome bar with the bumper on the rear fender, that can simply be removed.

I think he's talking about the curved "hoop" that crosses over the top of the rear fender on pre-09 bikes.
Some have cut them off and plugged the ends of what's left with chrome caps or even lights. Somebody on eBay sells a kit for removing the whole thing and replacing it with small brackets. There's a thread on here about it.
Supposedly, the bike is fine without it. I can't help wonder why the MOCO put it there, though. Take the cost of that chrome bar, multiply it by however many bikes bikes they made that have it, and you are looking at significant production cost over the life of that model run. Must be there for a reason? I don't know... this is just me thinking out loud. But for now, mine stays on.
The rear hoop that holds the License plate can be cut off....then a laydown license plate mount installed along with chrome plugs where you cut the pipe ends......I just can't cut anything on mine though!
Yes, the hoop can be removed. It's just a lp mount. Also supports the tp. But if you install detachable kit, you no longer need it to support the tp. Autogem shotgun lights are the coolest way to plug the holes.
Thanks, I have a Cvo so my license plate is at the bottom of the rear fender. I thought I could get the klock werk bag fillers like I did on my streetglide, but they said since its a cvo the rear fender is wider. Idk, i just want to get rid of it.
i did it on my 07 road king. never had wobble before, but after doing so, i had the wobble twice, and it didn't happen in the curve. it happened when i crossed the painted line in the center of the street. not 100% if that was the cause, but regardless, after that i put it back on again and never had that issue again.
