Default voltage problem

I was out riding with my buddy saturday. We were trucking down the highway doing 75 and his volt gauge on his 07 electric glide started bouncing around going from 12 volts up to 16 volts. when we got on a secondary road it stayed at 14 volts with no bouncing around. went over his house sunday with my multimeter. checked the battery at rest it had 12.9 volts and it wasnt on a battery tender the night before. started it up went to 14.4 volts. those numbers are right on the money. so I am note sure whats going on. he did tell me the battery is 6 years old. We have a trip planned for washington dc so he is buying a new battery but I am thinking the voltage regulator might be going bad. What do you all think?

Could be a loose connection, Voltage Gauge going bad or loose wires on the gauge. Open the cover on the primary drive and smell inside. If it smells like $hit it could be the altenator. Check the wires where they go through the casing to the Altenator. Also, check grounds and battery terminals to make sure they are tight.
