ok guys - those of you who have done the 95 stage 2 conversion, I need your imput.
I am scheduled to take my 05 ultra to the dealer Friday for the conversion. My question is this -
If you could do your stage 2 over - would you? I read a little while back in this column that someone thought the stage 2 kit was not very good.
Let me know ok. Your thoughts will help me decide if I will sink the $1300 into this project.
Thanks.
203 is a good cam for stock comp w/o doing anything to the heads. You will get a bump in HP and torque depending on your exhaust. You will definitely feel a difference. I went the same route except did a gear drive set up. I seated the rings today and wow- had to really hold on between 30-60 mph. Having it dyno'd tomorrow and then I'll really know how it did.
welll, the big bore kit is adding displacement, but the heads are where the real power is.
I got a complete Head-Quarters big bore with there .575 GD cams and head work and ignition and awsome 9.5 to 1 C/P pistons. parts alone are alittle over 2K but the results are proven.
on a budget Id do heads and cams over big bore, but when its all apart, do as much as you can!
I would chooseHQ 34 camsor Andrews 26s or 37s over SE cams.
$1300 seems likea lot of money for 75 hp and 85 torque (numbers are from HD 2007 catalog, page 540). You will notice a difference if you do the install, but different cams, some headwork, and a good tune will provide more for fewer $$$. JMHO.
I have used the 203 in one of my Baggers and, to me, it was absolutely AWEFUL! It was worse than stock until >3000RPM, at which time it pulled pretty hard. Sadly, that was not where I wanted the motor to be strong.
I pulled those and replaced them with Andrews 26's in less than a month. Those 203's sat on my shelf for 6 years until I finally gave them away.
Andrews 26's or HQ-0034's would be MUCH BETTER! If you can bump the compression and perhaps get the heads worked over, then 0034's .... if stock... I'd probably use the 26's.
I would not install 203's for someone, even if they asked me to, but that's just me.
do as retired ted and phil said go with the gear drive andrews 26s sen your heads to Short block Charlies in Tempe Az (Scottsman heads) 95" kit and pc111 you wont be dissapointed
this is what i have in my 02 ultra, but i have a sert. Good luck
Instead, I would have Hammer at Bishop's work my heads (or add SE heads), add the S&S 570 gear-driven cam set, and install the ThunderMax with Autotune (this means having 02 sensors injstalled in your pipes) for a rolling-dyno setup. Then later I would have changed to a big bore - but I wouldn't really have needed it. But I didn't! And now I' preparing to work over my Stage II Big Bore.
