I put them on in the fall when cold weather arrives and take them off again in the spring. They are hot in the summer months. Not so much on the engine as they are on my comfort. When it is 95 degrees outside you need all the air you can get to keep you cool. I take the triple tree baffle off in the summer too. It helps keep the rider a little cooler by evacuating hot air at the top of the engine away from the rider.
My 10 Ultra Classic came with them but My two RGC's did not. I just bought one set of slip on covers whatever they are called and take them with on a tour. If it rains I put them on. Use them during winter rides also. They do the job.
I have to differ with everyone else. I think they are marginal at best, at 50mph the buffeting starts to get pretty bad. I just put a set on and the memory of the homemade setup I had is still very fresh in my mind so it is easy to compare. My homemade setup is far superior to the lowers. Compared to nothing the lowers are fine I suppose, but I know it can be much better. If I can't come up with something to improve them I'll probably sell them and go back to my homemade setup.
The Ultra is my first experience with them. Took them off the first summer; put them back on a couple weeks later; the haven't been off the bike except for cleaning since.
I like the looks (subjective); I like reduced wind stress (objective); adjustable air flow and storage; and makes a good break against light rain.
Works for me.
I never take mine off. It's part of what makes an 'ultra'. I did completely remove the vent doors. That seemed to
Increase airflow, and they still protect your legs ffrom rain and wind fatigue. The airflow with and without is different. I can't say either is remarkably better, but it is different. If I ever bought a bike without them, I would add them ASAP.
Just took them off to clean off the love bugs that infest fla twice a year what a PITA. Like the breeze, but also looks like something's missing. I'll invoke the women's rule and change my mind several times a week and not tell anyone.
i had just crash bars on my 1700 Yamaha and got some desert dawgs for when it got cold or rainy. were really nice as you could take them off when it was hot and put them back on when cold or raining easily. had a 2010 ultra classic i was going to take the lowers off but never did....bought a 2013 limited....will probably not take them off either so i guess i like them. i ride often in cooler weather 35-60 degree weather during a lot of time as i use my bike as a daily driver and leave house at 0200 hrs in the morning for the 0300 hrs on station and starting work. never an issue of overheating but then, i have the vented kind. i'd recommend them.
