Update (of sorts),dont have the right tools at home so loaded it an took it to local shop.Good man but very busy and leaving for his own planned trip.Didnt pull the cam cover as he's fresh out of gaskets and didnt want to leave it open for 4 days.
Hes very easy to work with so I did an experiment (blessing maybe)disconnected the 2 hoses connecting the engine to oil tank, found them to be dry rotted and weak, but connected an empty oil bottle to return (top) and full to intake with 3/8 hose, fired it up,pump seems to be fine and it pumped the full empty and filled the empty about the same amount (maybe a tad more) but with the top reconnected it would't return oil to the tank? So,back to head scratching and have to wait till tues.,to get new gaskets and wed. for new connecting hoses, special order not in stock. Now have another 1/2 qt.hiding somewhere.Hooked up air hose to return and no obstruction in the tank but who knows.

The oil has got to be in the sump. I guarantee if you pulled the cam cover off you would find your oil.
You can reuse the old gasket a couple of times, no problem.
There is an oil screen in the cam case, but I am not sure which line it is on, I believe it is on the one from the oil tank.
The return oil pump is larger than the one that goes to the motor so that it keeps ahead of the ingoing oil, so it is normal of it to pump more oil out than in.
The problem has to be in the oil line going back to the tank, did you try blowing air through that line and which way did you blow the line.
It would be pressured out so is not collapsing, can you pull that like off and check it?
