There is an externalvent line that attached to the side of the fuel fill. When you park your bike the engine heat radiates to the fuel tank which warms the fuel causing it to expand and push air or fuel vapor out this vent. It ends near the rear of the primary by the frame. I always park mine with a full tank of fuel and sometimes if its just a little too full, some gas will exit through this vent. My RG is an '02 carbureted, but I think all have this vent. If the smell is gone when the engine cools off, this may be where the gas smell is coming from.
You sir are 100% correct.....I am not sure if there is a prize or not though.
I have discovered the same EXACT issue as stated above. The fuel overflow line that goes from the recessed area under the fuel fill cap is where some fuel can poolif the tank was recently
filled all the way up....then when its placed on the side stand it will get into the overflow line.
Or....if the tank is almost full and the engine has been just shut down there may be some venting, and this will also exit via the same line. The reason you smell the fumes more right after parking, is because the bike is now in a confined area, and not riding down the road, and the heat rising directly off the hot engine (and not getting blown to the rear as when your riding)
will cause more venting of fumes.....I think???
All of a sudden when I parked my '07 Ultra Classic in the garage I had a very strong odor of gasoline. A new gas cap cost a little over $20.00. Ask me how I know.
Anyway this is probably too simple, but are you sure you didn't leave the gas cap at the last place you filled up?

My 08 Ultra smells like gas after riding and the engine is fully warmed. It reminds me ofmy muscle cars after I drive them. I have checked the gas cap and its tight. I am about due for my 1K check (snow dependant) so I will have it checked.
