Default New upgrade might be too fast!

I don't want to be called a wimp, but today, I took my 2009 for a nice ride after being in the shop for 4 months for upgrades, some I did my self.

After riding a 95CI dyno'd a 86hp, 101tq for several years, I built a custom bagger, I was looking to get it dyno'd, took it to get the T-Max tuned for my additions which are the following:

T-Max
255 cams
Rineharts 3.5" with duals
Heads ported, polished, 10.1 big valves and springs
SE 103 pistons.
SE Ventilator
That's it folks.

Well the tuner told me to take it out for a 1000 miles or so and get it broken in before he will dyno it, I said, ok.
I put 400 miles on her and decided to get into the throttle and boy she took off.
I've been riding since I was a kid, took time off, now I've been a regular rider for the last 15 years.
I got into her pretty good, shifted it around 4K to 4.5K, I'm here to tell you, I was a little scared on how quickly it took me to get 85MPH, and I was only in 4th gear.
My question here is not bragging rights, but how fast is fast when upgrading you bike.
I've found this upgrade is plenty fast for me, I'm just astounded on how quickly this scooter went.
My 2002 95 is nothing like this one, I've rode the wheels off of the 95, NO comparison.
I"m getting older, still like to ride, drive, party, fast.
Now, I don't even know if I want to get the thing dyno'd, it's running great with the T-Max, Just food for thought, any others out there, feel their bike is fast enough or too fast?

For myself (and probably a lot of people) it's a matter of return vs money spent. I'm sure that with enough money, a harley engine has untold performance potential. The bottom line is, how much do you want to spend to gain xx hp and xx tq. Some people have unrealistic expectations of how much 'go fast' a couple thousand dollars worth of engine upgrades will get you.

Is my bike fast enough? No. Am I willing to spend the necessary $$$ to get there? No. If power was cheap, everyone would be running a 120r. My engine hauls me and my ol around as fast as we want to go. I have 100 ft lbs of tq at 2200 rpm, And that does the job. If I ever hit the lottery, well, different story....

Well, I've been riding for 40 years and owned over 20 bikes(where has the time gone!). I've owned bikes where a 100% of my riding ability only used 40% of the bikes capability (i remember a 750 gpz turbo with the boost jacked up that would hit 3000 rpm and take off like someone had just ignited an afterburner).
I love Harleys for many reasons, one of them being the bikes ability matches my ability. I have a 09 FLHP set up similar to your bagger that will actually outrun my 2013 cvo rg. Have fun and ride safe.

All depends on how your *** dyno feels...Ride it a while with all different situations, styles, roads, load and you will make a better based decision.

Dave, i would still get it dynoed. I also agree on some peoples expectations at how much power we should get for ??? $! tuning is the last process of the build. once that is done ride the dog snot out of it and enjoy your "new bike"! I just finished mine and the dyno tune brought everything together!

Harley fast is a relative term. Relative to the same identical model of Harley, it has some merit. Mixing models and comparing means little.

Harley fast? Yamaha fast? Honda fast? Suzuki fast? All relative, and HD is the slowest when talking "fast". Now if you want to talk fun and enjoyment...that's another story.

The T'Max runs in closed-loop throughout the operating range, so if the installed tune is fairly close it will tune on the fly to the specifications your tuner has specified. Learn to use the T'Max and you should not need a dyno tune to get AFR's spot-on.

OTOH, T'Max will not auto-tune ignition advance, and it does not have a knock-sensor built into the computer code. If you hear no detonation that is a good sign, but it is possible that you could add more advance in places for optimal operation, and anyway I doubt if it would be worth the cost. I also think that doing so might not be noticeable to you in seat-of-the-pants performance. You could "tune by ear" and advance/retard accordingly, but that's hard to do at WOT. Where did the original tune come from? If it is tailored for a Stage II 103" setup I think it should be very close, although you are running a tad more compression at 10.1:1.

I would just be sure to set AFR's near stoich (stock 14.6:1) in the cruise range for optimal mileage and add an oil cooler if you don't already have one. A Ward FCS fan kit would be a big step toward controlling heat, too.

Talking

Dyno tuning is not about getting AFRs right, but getting a smooth optimum torque curve, IMHO. Having invested so much time and effort, getting it set up right is simply the final step! Don't stint on doing the job right.

As for what is too much, I am currently at 101HP and 107TQ. Just makes me want a little more! If I could afford it (and my fairy godmother delivers ) my next move would be an S&S 124" with 585 cam and high 120s HP/TQ. I reckon I would call it a day then, assuming I don't find myself being blown off the back of the thing.....

My car goes fast but my bike sounds good and is a little more fun to go slow on.
