Default Redi Gas Can

Two or three years ago I bought one of these 1 gal ? gas cans to put in my rear bag on longer trips. My carbed bike always needed gas running with the fuel injection boys/bigger tank boys so I thought it was a good but expensive idea($40). Now I see the front seam looks stressed and is splitting open. No leak yet but what a mess it would make if it came apart. What to do? Anybody else have this issue?

I would contact the manufacturer and see what can be done. Have you had to use it, I have never found the need for a gas can even on my cage?

I'd be very leery about carrying extra fuel, much less in something plastic. The interior of your bag can get pretty warm in the sun, even if the ambient temp is reasonable. Plastic containers can split/burst pretty easily. I'd be willing to bet that's what is causing yours to fail. Not being a wisea$$, but do you really (I mean really) need to carry extra fuel?

Also not being a smart@ss, but since you have to pull over to use the extra can, why not just pull over into a station? Its nice of you to not want to hold up the group an extra 10 minutes, but really it shouldn't bother them if they enjoy riding with you.

There are a few parts of this country where you can find yourself where that's just not an option. I'm guessing Springfield, OH isn't one of them ;-)

Point taken.

My first thought would be to look into a fuel bottle made with motorcycling in mind:
http://www.touratech-usa.com/Store/P...-Fuel-Canister

I'm not seeing a lot of good options right off, but in my years of off-road riding the only real issue we had was if we forgot to squeeze out some air so the cool gas had somewhere to expand in the container when the day warmed up. Never had one burst, but did have them weep. Not a big deal when everything is covered in mud, but I sure wouldn't want that in my hard bag.

Edit: Ah, "Reda"... not redi. I wasn't familiar with the product and thought you were using a basic jerry can. I yield my time to the more knowledgeable among us.

I agree with those who are leery about the need to carry fuel. In years of pack riding, complaints about someone needing to stop for gas more that most, have been extremely rare (I especially recall someone on a Boss Hoss trike with a 350 Vette engine who seemed for ever riding on fumes!). And as I recall, those who did complain were NOT really pack riders and generally a pain in the @ss in general! For my part, I would rather dump someone who's whining about your need to fill up more than most, than you, who is obviously considering the pack and diggin' the ride. For my money: lose the can man!!!

There are PLENTY of reasons to carry extra fuel out west. Even going through west Texas, I was worried. Some places in NM, AZ, UT NV, WY can be 250 miles between stations. I always keep a Reda can full in my left bag. Have for over 2 years. Use it twice a season and refill it.
