My wife and I travel all the time and we use a heavy chain with a slip ring andchain the bikes together with an strong U-Lock. If they have the time and proper tools to cut that so be it, but they way we have it set up the thiefs will go somewhere else.

Check it out The THEX33 is a "T-HEX" maximum security chain 3 ft 3" (1 meter) in length with hardened 10mm hexagon shaped links

I'd always try and book at a hotel where your room faces the parking lot and put my bike right outside the door. In fact if the door is wide enough I'd wheelmy Babyright into the room with me (as mentioned above, ask if they have a handicapped room available and walk with a pronounced LIMP as you go in and out of the office, lol).

Good insurance, take your valuables in with you, and have a credit card that can handle the flight home. Good excuse to get new bike.

i do agree about carrying a weapon though. even if you don't shoot em, i don't know of anyone that would continue stealing a bike after a few rounds are shot in the air.
There are plenty of guys who will(actually they will kill you first however).

I used to be half owner of a chopper shop some years ago & came in contact with some real bad ***** who would steal bikes for a living(they never came right out & admitted it, but we all knew what they where up to). If you had caught one of these guys stealing your ride & pulled a gun, if you didn't shoot first & ask questions later you would have died right where you stood(believe me, these guys weren't some punk-*** shoplifters).

I carried a gun in my old crazy days(I never actually pulled it thank god), but I don't find it necessary anymore. I have no argument with someone who is carrying for whatever reason, but if you pulla gunon a bike thief you better be damn ready to shoot somebody(& it's tough to claim it was self defense if you shoot someone in the back loading your bike into the back of a truck(that is how 99% of the bikes are taken)

park your sleeping bag next to the bike and bed down........best bet
otherwise the mom and pop motels work real good...second best
next to that i always find out were the security camera is aimed and try to park bike there with as much security as i have. if nothin else i make sure i have a clean ,unobstructed shot from my window.. BANG if i catch the bastard no doubt about it.

been thinkin about a gps chip.

How ironic is this thread ? Most people watch the Harley adds and cringe. They see us on the road and pull there kids away. They warn there your ladies to STAY AWAY form bikers, there nothing but trouble. You here bikers are badasses, yet here we are, THE BAD *** and we’re worried about someone steeling the bikes. It takes a real dumbass or badass to steel a bike knowing how a man feels about his Harley.
A friend of mine bought a goldwing cover for his harley and hasn’t had one problem with theft. Not even one person wanting to take a peek. Is that funny or what ?
If a thief wants your bike , its done (if he has friends) but i haven’t heard of one bike stolen with rotor locks and alarm systems.

I agree with alot of the suggestion above.......I also have been looking at buying a gun to carry, but I believe that I might get in just as much trouble being in a state that does not recognize my concealed weapons permit. So if I pull it what other trouble might I be in trying to protect my bike...... I would hate to lose my bike to some sum bag , butIalso don't want to end up in jail..... Guess just make sure you have enough insurance and enjoy your trip.

Simple security system, lock the fork, put a cable thru the frame of two bikes, and get a good nights sleep. If they want it that bad, they can have it. My insurance co. will get me home and replace the bike.

Its not worth sweating over it. Just make sure all your add ons are covered under the Insurance, and save reciepts...Make sure you have FULL REPLACEMENT and not pro rated..

Oh, when I chain the together, I have one facing each direction. This makes it impossible for a thief to roll it anywhere..and much harder for a group to lift them onto a flatbed

Well said - I am very pro gun - however - a weapon can only be used if your life is in direct danger - going outside your home/motel to greet the bad guys with your weapon and then decide to use it - it is going to be a hard sell to the jury that you feared for your life so much that you went outside. I have followed several stories of self defense - some make it some don't -
Ya, our bike is our baby - buts its only a bike -
I truly believe most bike being stolen are "acts of opportunity" the bad guys really want an easy steal and will pass up the locked bikes for the easy target - If the bad guys Really want your bike - they will get it. I was at Reno a few years back when I saw a group of bikers talking to the local PD - seems a van with a flatbed trailer had pulled up - four guys got out picked up a "locked" bike drop it on the trailer and gone - in a matter of seconds - The last thing I am going to do is chase down a van with at "Least" four bad guys in it - I just may catch it....

Like the dog chasing the car - what the hell is he going to do with it if he is able to bike the tire...lol
