Hi all, just a quick question. I am a full fledged fat man (350+) and I am wondering if the stock air shocks are enough for a man my size, I'm on a new to me 05 road glide. I find the bike bottoming out over harder bumps which are becoming more commonplace where I live. If I put more air in them, say 35-40 psi, will that be enough preload? I did have progressive shocks on my old bike, an 02 electra glide, that worked well, I just don't fell like spending the $$ on different suspension if I can make what I have work. I am bottoming out solo, I would hate to know what it will be like with a passenger
According to the manual on an 04, the rider weight max is 200lbs with a passenger being an extra 200lbs. That equals 400lbs. Also, the shocks max air pressure is 25lbs.
If your bottoming out, you may have to change those shocks.

Any help is appreciated
Given your weight, I just don't see the stock shocks supporting you sufficiently. Do not put that much air in your 05, or you will blow the seals.
I think you're going to have to buck up and replace them. I went with the Progressive 440's, but I'm only at 240#. Many different options out there, Ohlins, JRI, Progressive, etc.
Not what you're wanting to hear, but don't see the stock shocks holding up for you.
I changed the 5wt oil in my rear shocks to Bel-Ray 10wt and changed the front forks to 10 weight also. Wife and I are bigger people and made a huge difference in the ride.
Your real close to the max suggested riders combined weight at 350+. I think the max pressure for the older model HD Air Shocks is 30 psi so anything more than that may blow your seals.
Springs and in the HD Shocks air bags and springs support the bike, dampening changes the compression and rebound of the shock. In your case you first need enough spring pressure to support the bike with you on it.
Try pumping them up to the max and check your sag and the overall ride. I think you probably will need to go to aftermarket shocks, customs like JRI, Ohlins, Works TerryCable may be the best for you since those companies will spring the shocks to your needs, but they are expensive. You might call Progressive and look into some 444 with the HD springs but Id call their Tech line first, ask for Frank he is a good guy and knows his products he will give you some fair advice.
I figured I would need to bite the bullet. I had progressive 440's before and they worked well, I was just hopig to avoid the expense. Thanks for the feedback...
My wife and I are 450lbs together. Constantly bad handling on the 06 Electric Glide. Went to Americade yesterday and bit the bullet for Terrycable shocks vendor after talking to him for about 15 minutes. I can't tell you what a difference these shocks make. Get rid of the POS HD shocks (mine constantly leaked) and get these. I could not research enough info on my phone but nothing bad came up in reviews. Drove 300 miles on them so far. It's like a different bike.
