Thank you all! I will not do the HD lock again then. I think I will try one of the small carry along locks that I can run through the D rings and attach to the bike someplace.
Buddy of mine gave me a set of police handcuffs to use. Lock one end around the crash bar, the other through the D-Ring, and hang the helmet from the highway peg or something. No key needed to put them on. Probably easy to pick, but as my friend said, do you really want to steal something secured with handcuffs?
I didn't like the locks so we just run a bicycle lock and cable around the chinguards (FF Helmets) and lock to the (locked) backrest.
Multiple advantages:
1. More secure than the D-ring
2. Helmet stays upright so things don't "fall" in.
3. Helmets go in the seat which prevents someone from sitting on the bike.
4. No permanent external lock to see.
