So I found a sweet deal on a flat black Dayton Skull cap helmet on ebay for $25 so I gave it a shot hoping to reduce the mushroom look. I think they guy bought it and did not like it and moved it along.
What I got was a lighter, more comfortable and continued mushroom look but improved over the Harley half helmet. I guess there are no good looking DOT helmets that give that novelty helmet look due to the amount of protection required.
So I will just take a balance of comfort, looks and safety and ride it until I find some thing better. Going to keep an eye for an AK88 next or I might get creative and "adjust" the helmet my self with some tools....maybe shave it a little...
Good looking and DOT do not go together and if they do...chances are when DOT tests the helmet it fails. That is what happened to the Outloaw super low profile and the ACC helmets.
Found a great way to make the helmet fit better and reduce the mushroom look. I noticed the middle head pad/liner is sewn in only to the front and back of the helmet and it keeps your head from fully seating like a hammock on top. This may be for comfort or cooling but it gave me a mushroom head.
So I just cut the seam in the back and the pad now lets my head fully fit in the helmet and it looks so much better. The pad rests fine and does not fall out so I am really pleased with it now and it actually feels more comfortable as the helmet is not resting on my head with just the center pad but a nice fit all around the helmet top and sides.
I would recommend this to anyone as it really changed the look of the helmet. It will come down much further on your head but not too far to interfere with your ears.
