Default Trailering

Picked up my trailer from Mini Trailer USA in Vinita Ok and pulled it home to Burleson Tx a couple of weeks ago, Love the trailer and it pulls real good but I was wondering if I should stay in 5th most of the time because when I go to 6th the bike dosent seem to have much pulling power. What are your thoughts. Kickstands up in 47days, Cant wait to see the Black Hills of SD again.

Thanks Guys.

It's hard to describe, but don't bog the engine. If it feels 'more comfortable' pulling in 5th, then I'd use that. If the engine is in a constant strain in 6th, that's probably not good. My bike only has 5 gears and runs at 3000-3200 rpm on the slab. It's happy to do that all day long, so higher rpm isn't going to hurt it. Especially when more load is added....

I think the OP is talking about pulling a trailer behind his bike. If the gearing on your 2010 is anything like my 2009 I would guess you'd run 5th most of the time, I find I actually get better MPG in 5th here in the Smoky MTNs , 6th puts rpm's down to about 2150 at 60 MPH too low for smooth power

On two lane roads with a speed limit of 55-60 mph I'll usually run 5th. On the Interstate, 75+ pulls best in 6th.

Higher RPMs are not near as hard on the motor as lugging it in higher gear.

Firebike32, What kind of MPG are your getting? It looks like you have the same trailer as I do. When I was pulling it home I was getting 28-30 which is a lot less then I get normally.

I don't normally baby it so I'm usually in the mid to low 30s. Had one trip back from Rapid City into the wind and pressed for time, she dropped to 28. Best I've had with the trailer was 55mpg in Yellowstone. Of course the 45 mph speed limit might have helped.
