Default Do you really need to...

I am going to be replacing my IPB and race (I hear it making some noise and will be going on a trip soon and don't want any issues). While I am in there, I am upgrading to the SE compensator and replace the chain tensioner with a Hayden. Obviously replacing all the seals, gaskets, etc.

Reading the service manual to remove the inner primary case (so you can get the IPB out), it says you need to remove the starter. I was wondering from people that have done this before if you really need to?

What is the best way to remove the bearing from the primary case and to install it, do you use an arbor press(which I don't have) or is there an alternative people use with success.

I have about 35k on the bike (2008 Ultra Classic), should I replace the primary chain?

If I remember to, I might take some photos and post as I do not see this procedure on you tube or on this forum (unless someone has a link that would be helpful).

what else should I do while I am in there. There is a bearing on the clutch assembly, should I replace that. should I tear the clutch apart to check that out?

any suggestions would be helpful as I plan to start this project tomorrow evening, at least start the teardown.

Yes, you need to unbolt the starter. It bolts into the back of the inner primary, but you don't need to "remove" it.

thanks, is that hard to get to with the exhaust in the way? The service manual is kind of vague on where the bolts are. It says to unbolt it. helpful, no pics that I could see.

3/16" extended length ball socket allen wrench gets to it pretty easily.

You may want to disconnect the battery before going into the primary. I've read that the starter can be accidentally engaged somehow or other.

Ditto on disconnecting the battery first. If you dont have a press, when you get to that step, you should be able to take it to a machine shop or something and have em remove and install it for you for little charge. While you are in there, I would replace every wear and tear item since its opened up already. I would do some reasearch on IPB replacement and try to gather any special tools/parts you may need BEFORE you tear into it, you dont want to be short needing something and not have it. Good luck man.

The pinion gear on the starter is designed to move outwards to engage the ring gear when you depress the start switch. The pinion can be moved outward manually and if this happens the starter will crank and if you're fingers are in the way .............?

The starter is held in place with (2) bolts and the starter is positioned using dowels. Good idea about just unbolting but not removing. When replacing the starter be careful not to cross thread the bolts.

Once you get clutch drum off, you can see the inner race and get a good view of the rollers when you tun it. Once you are that far, drop the rear wheel to get the belt off rear drive pulley and slide belt forward off front pulley. Now you can spin the input shaft thru the transmission and get a good feel on how the bearing fill in the transmission. Something you can never fill with belt and primary chain linked up. Just shift up thru the gears and check each one.
