$10, 16" spade bit from Home Depot, 30 minutes later and heat was gone. It is unbelievable how much heat the cat puts out.
Google search for how hot a catalytic converter gets....
A catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system because it cleans up exhaust pollutants. They begin to operate at about 55 degree Fahrenheit but become efficient at 750 degrees
my wife and i went on about a 300 mile round trip yesterday from southern mary to the bethany beach area to see the grandkids. its about 2.5-3 hrs, depending on traffic. its the first really long trip, for her anyway, that she has taken with me. after about an hour and a half into the trip, she commented about the heat. i mentioned its a factor of design and function of the cat. i also brought up the option of new pipes to correct the problem and get rid of it. she was curious about the option and she was almost supportive. i think a couple of more long rides and i'll be getting a stage 1 with the wifes blessing.
This guy has it nailed. Changing your pipes out, removing the catalytic convertor, adding a fuel device etc., etc., etc. These all all expensive options for the operator, for the most part. They all work to some degree but you still have hot gasses being routed through the exhaust pipe and you are the recipient of all that radiant heat from both the engine and the exhaust pipe. You need something to keep the radiant heat off your skin. Try some light weight boots that extend up your calf. That is a hell of a lot cheaper than all the other stuff suggested, if it works.

Sounds like the touring bikes are not meant for two up riding anymore. I have a 13 Heritage. All I did was put new slip on's on and wa-la! Cat gone, sound arrived. Two up riding no heat.
look on craigslist for a pipe($100-150) that has been gutted...see them on there quite often. add some xied's for a little over a hundred bucks and your problem will be solved. the newer harley mufflers are a little more free flowing to compensate for the catalytic converter---with it gone you get a nice sound from the stock mufflers.
just installed my Fuel Moto head pipe with PCV tuner and boy am i a happy camper. Way better throttle response, sounds throatier (if that's even a word) and best of all the heat has diminished. I can now ride with shorts on and not burn the hell out of my leg. I know, I know, no riding with shorts on, but here in the valley when it gets to be over 100 it's difficult to put on jeans
I have a 2007 Ultra Classic and my wife complained of the same thing and she always wear high boots. I'm not sure it has the cat or not, I don't believe so. However, the fuel moto stage 1 kit, and Captain Itch's crotch cooler solved the issue for her.
I'm going through this as well. Is there a difference between Fuel Moto pipes or going through Wild Pigs and have stock pipes gutted? I know if i go through Fuel Moto with the pipes and tuner it's close to $700. Wild Pigs def sounds like the better deal
There is about 1.8 HP difference between the gutted factory pipe and the FuelMoto 2-1-2, and the power and torque curves are about the same. If you don't plan to do a lot of upgrades beyond an aircleaner, mufflers, tuner and a mild cam, the gutted pipe will serve you well and save you a lot.
You can do it yourself if you have a little mechanical skill and know a TIG welder.
