What cause a stator to go bad? Harley replaced mine a year and a half ago under warranty... I do not believe they replaced the regulator. Got hit by a drunk driver... When I went to pick up the Bike 6 months later it would not start. They did a battery. Then a starter... After riding about 30 minutes the check engine and batter light started coming on intermittently. I took it back to the bike shop and they now suspect the stator... I should have taken the bike to Harley to get the work done but I didn't. That is another issue... Progressive totaled my Bike.. then un totataled it... They have put 12 grand into my 07 Ultra and I still don't have a bike to ride...but thats another thread...

Any one of several things can cause a stator to go bad. Most of the time the problems that cause the stator to try and put out it's max power burns it up. Bad connections, corrosion on the connections, poor grounds, bad regulator, and or a bad battery can cause the stator to work harder to put the power out and it gets too hot. If the stator is bad it will show up when they do a proper diagnostic check on it for both shorting and output.

Default Bad stator

My bike has 59k on it. It's a 2005 ultra standard. I also changed the rotor and voltage regulator. Threw new clutch plates in there also. 59 k on them too. Bike is charging fine now.

Wow, This forum is great. I am having the same problem with my 04 EGC. I thought it was fixed when I tighten up the loose batt cables. But per the gauge it would start off around 10 or 11 then a couple minutes it would go to 14 and stay until i sit at Idle and it would go down around 12 then back up. I rode off and on for a couple of days(using the reliable VTX for work) because I didn't have faith and didn't want to get stranded like before when it died 1/2 m from the house. I did check the connectors with a meter but I will get a light tester before I bite the bullet and take it in. Interesting because my bike has the 1550 kit and revs high could this possibly shorting the life of the stator on a little over 20k miles?

Take the derby cover off and take a wiff. If it smells like electrical it's your stator.

Riddle me this Batman......

Mine is not charging.. at all..

VR check and there is no voltage on either pin...
battery voltage is at 12.3 when the bike is running ( with meter) ..but only shows 11v on gauge. ( battery shows 12.6 not running fully charged..

Stator check : Output is at 32+ VAC @ 2K rpm..
Resistance is approximately .02 ohms between both pins..
but.. there is 0.01 or 0.00 when each pin is grounded.. no infinity reading..

How can it put out the correct voltage to the regulator and still not charge.. how does the shorted to ground condition affect the charging system?? why won't it charge if it's outputting the correct voltage?
So is my stator bad then??? or is it the VR??

If you don't have any loose connections on the starter or battery I would say it is the VR. The stator readings say it is ok to me. Infinity is 0 reading.

1550 and revs is not going to cause this. Stator or VR or bad connections.

PROBLEM SOLVED! I installed the Cycle Electrics 3 phase 50 amp upgrade kit - CE-84T-99. Hopefully this will be my last charging issue with this bike.
The new system puts out 35 amps at idle and 50 at 2500 rpms. Always over 14 volts now and I am sure that my 360 w amp and Sony head are happy.
