I don't think you put them in upside down. The way you did it is how they are meant to be used. The slot is so the insert will compress a little if it needs to when it is inserted.

Cheap, easy fix.

Road Glides do not use metal inserts like on the batwing fairings. The inner fairing bolts on to the outer fairing with screws which screw into plastic.

I didn't know that. I have no experience with the rg fairings. That would explain the post about replacing all seven at the same time when the batwings only have three.

the bat wing has 7, 3 at the top for the windshield and 2 on each side toward the bottom for the bolts that come thru from the back side (one by the speaker and one underneath by the forks)

Yeah, but I had never heard of anyone having problems with any other than the top three for the windshield. I guess it stands to reason if you remove and replace them enough, you'll have problems with all of them as they come from the factory.

Dennis
the ones that came out on me where the top ones on both sides by the speakers, one of them pulled all the way out, when I got the fairing off had to hold the insert while I turned the bolt out, not really something you would think you would have to do to a 4 year old bike that cost over $22,000

The plastic bosses for the sheet metal-like screws are only about a 1/4" in dia. IIRC.
