Break in question for big bore
Judging from this i am thinking he did not split the cases but pulled the cam chests from the case.
Still don't know if the rings were cast or Molly. I would think S&S would be Molly.
Break in procedure depends on how long you want your motor to last.
If you are going to run the **** out of your bike then brag about that you have thirty k on the bike, then have the motor set up loose run cast and have fun during the break in.
Does this Hurt the motor, no just wears it faster.
On the other hand if you are going for a high mileage motor, use Molly rings, set the gap tight and take it easy on the break in and let every thing seat slowly.
After all, that is what you are doing wearing the rings in.
Lets talk about cast vs Molly.
HD uses cast rings. Cast rings wear fast, break in fast. On the other hand Molly wear longer take longer to break in. That is why I ask it makes a big difference.
Two things that wear rings faster during break in, heat, and cylinder pressure/load.
Load is caused by exceleration, cylinder pressure pushes the ring up against the wall and it wears faster with the extra pressure.
Lets talk about oil on the piston top. The last thing the machinist does to the cyclender is home it. Most people think this is to make the rings wear faster, the main reason to home is to give oil a place to stay and not be scraped off by the oil ring so that the top rings get lubricated and do not wear out during break in.
Molly rings use a different stone grit than cast.
So where are we, you have a motor with no symptoms, just oil Past the rings.
Personally I don't think you have a problem. I think the honing is doing its job letting oil up to the top ring and some getting into the cyslender.
I think you have Molly rings and a motor that is not broke In yet, nice thing about rings is that they wear, or will still wear in.
By now I am sure I am writing this after the fact and that your engine guy is figuring out the bill by now.
So sure he put in cast rings, set it up loose, so run the **** out of it like he said. Ignore S&S advice. After all he wants to keep you as a repeat customer.
I did this on my phone so sorry for the spiling.
