Whats happening everybody! First off I am brand new to this forum so forgive me if this may be a redundant post! I have grown up around harley's however just finally purchased my first one at 37 yrs old. Enough about me my question is my 00 fxst has 31, 000 on it and I want to upgrade this motor to a 95 I already know I am going with the screamin eagle pro stage 2 kit, and I also want to git rid of the chain drive cam. Not sure if I should go the cheaper route hydraulic tensioner or go gear driven? Second question what else should I do to the motor well to essentially rebuild it? Thanks for all of your input it is greatly appreciated! Ohhh side note I do my own wrenching!
I would go gear drive for sure. Also why you are in there fueling plate and high flow oil pump. Quick adjustable pushrods?? And are you getting any head work done??
Have not thought about the head work to be honest. The kit I got comes with the HF oil pump so I am covered there. Definately going with adjustable pushrods. Since I do my own wrenching lets say I have a budget of say 2000.00 for parts lol wife wont like that but hey the bike does not talk back or insult me lmao
Ohhh I also forgot to mention I ride very aggressively. I try not to be that obnoxious ahole but however I think sometimes the open road taunts me to rule over it like a submissive concubine!!!!
I would study cams first and afte you find the cam you want build your motor around that (as far as compression and so on). A lot of your power are going to come from your heads so I would get your heads done and probably go with a .030 head gasket. Also check out www.harleytechtalk.org there is a lot of engine builder on there and a lot of dyno sheets so you could see what cams do what and what head work people have done etc.
Take a look at tmanperformance.com, you can talk to him personally on the phone. He has kits and will steer you right even if you don't buy from him. Same goes for protwin.com. If your going to do that much you may as well do heads too. They will be off anyway. You may have someone in your area that does head work on motorcycles. For a few hundred more you can have a helluvaride. Also don't forget getting the carb jetted right or all the work will be ****. Hope you have considered opening up the intake and exhaust to allow the beast to breath. A good 95 or 98 with exhaust and intake, well the whole package will easily push up around 3500 done right. Even with you wrenching.
Definitely head work. If you don't do head work you will only get about 75% to 80% out of your build and what it is capable of producing. A Dyno tune too.
Thanks for all the input folks I really appreciate it lots of great advice. And keep em coming I will be doing the rebuild this winter and also shooting some new paint. I will get some artwork up for all to see I do custom airbrushing at a way lower rate than most simply cause I love painting.
