My 2003 FLHTCUI has had an intermittently responsive mode change switch for about a year. Usually if I hit it about 20 times it will eventually switch. I have a squeak in my fairing also, so I know I probably have a broken bracket, and was going to order the Ragan brackets, but I never did. Too cold to work on in Winter, and would rather ride in Summer.
So of course, today, the day before I leave on a 4 day trip, my radio goes bonkers. Was trying to switch radio stations, but the seek button raised the volume to the max. Then volume and even power off button wouldn't respond, so I had to shut the speakers off to avoid getting run out of town for blaring at stoplights at max volume.
Should I take my fairing off now, or wait til I get back from my trip? Any way to repair the radio or will I have to sent it to Iron Cross anyway? Is taking the fairing off tricky and probably break something, or is it easier than it looks?
The fairing is a piece of cake! 2 bolts on left side, 2 bolts and right and the three bolts that hold your windshield on. All #27 torx bolts. Good luck!
I had the same problem. I had a loose ground in addition to a broken bracket. You don't have to unhook the battery, actually, leave it plugged in so you can test the radio as you go.
The fairing will take 5 mins to take off the first time. It's easier than you think!

Dont be scared of the fairing removal - its easier than you think, have someone hold it as you remove the final screws, just to be safe so it doesnt drop on your fender. Take your time gently unscrewing the 7 Torx (#27) screws and your good.
Oh and when reassembling tighten the screws GENTLY - they can strip easy and cause some hassles
Have you had the bike since 03 and never had the fairing off? Anyways, I seem too take everything apart at one point or another! Everyone in this thread was spot on. Have fun!
