So I'm on my trip out west and couple days ago I noticed the needle in my charging gauge is fluttering up and down, from like 13 to 15 volts. So this goes on for a day and then I notice it at times going down to the 12 volt mark. So I was close to Pikes Peak HD and pulled in there.
Well they were really great. As I was on the road, they get me in within 5 minutes. At first they felt it was the regulator and replaced it. That wasn't to prob so they pull it off and then said the stator wasn't putting out as much as it should. Now I had just had the staor and reg replaced about 5000 miles ago.
So they tear it down yesterday as I waited and replaced the stator, cleaned up my bike and sent me on my merry way. Needle was steady and at 14 volts. So this after as I am heading towards Utah, yep, the needle starts jumping around again. So far, as it moves, it does stay right above and below 14 volts. Boy am I hoping I can make it back to Pa starting tomorrow afternoon.
Any clues as to what might be the cause. Any chance it could be the gauge. Bike is a 2010 and just turned over 60,000 miles
I think it'd be worth stopping at a radio shack, harbor freight, autozone etc. and getting a $14 voltmeter and checking the reading at the battery...make sure what you see on the dash is somewhat "accurate"-
if you have a battery tender pigtail, that makes even easier to get a reading at the battery
