Default It's baaaaack! Primary chatter.

Thought I had it figured out when I had the SE compensator installed and then tightened up the footboard bracket that my Indy forgot to snug up. Also dumped exactly 38 oz. of Formula+ in the primary. But the chatter is back! I can't find anything else loose to tighten. Very frustrating. What else could be causing a progressively louder chatter between 2000 - 2500 rpm while shifting up thru the gears? It can't be "normal" because it didn't make that noise for the first 25,000 miles. What do bad lifters sound like?

Add another 16 oz of oil to your primary. Damn the specs!

I am no expert but you may have a bearing issue in your primary. I have a buddy that had a similiar description to your issue. He let his fester till the bike was almost unrideable. Primary bearing was the cause. Set him back almost $800. Good luck

Thanks for your service, and thanks for the response. Hadn't thought about bearings.

I have what your describing but it only happens after it's shut off for a bit then start it up again. Its more pronounced between shifts then after a few miles stops. From what I've been reading it may be either cam chain noise of lifter bleed down. I had the dealership look at it and it wasn't doing it at the time. It almost sounds like the top end isn't getting lubrication till the system pumps up again...hell I don't know. As far as thinking it's the compensator, I would stop thinking it's the problem.

If it's the inner primary bearing you would be able to hear it at idle with the bike not moving. Pull the clutch lever in, shift into first, then back to neutral and keep the clutch lever pulled in - should be quiet. Then release the clutch lever and listen for it to sing. If it does I'd bet inner primary bearing

One would think/hope that whoever changed the comp also checked the 'primary mechanics'... IPB, drive chain, tensioner, clutch/spring/hub bearing, MB, both door bearings, shaft...

What mods have you done to this bike... Has it been on a dyno...
