One would think/hope that whoever changed the comp also checked the 'primary mechanics'... IPB, drive chain, tensioner, clutch/spring/hub bearing, MB, both door bearings, shaft...
What mods have you done to this bike... Has it been on a dyno...
'09 Ultra, 28,000 easy miles, Stage 1, Jackpot slip-ons with HD download. Recently installed SE compensator. It has not been on a dyno. Bike runs strong and smooth and consistently gets 40-41 mpg. Started noticing a slight chatter from the left side when shifting thru the gears about 1,500 miles ago and it has gotten progressively louder. My Indy and I thought we had it isolated to the compensator, so didn't do a full exploratory on clutch, bearings, etc. Guess we're going back to look elsewhere.
If it's the inner primary bearing you would be able to hear it at idle with the bike not moving. Pull the clutch lever in, shift into first, then back to neutral and keep the clutch lever pulled in - should be quiet. Then release the clutch lever and listen for it to sing. If it does I'd bet inner primary bearing
Don't really notice chatter when idling and no difference whether clutch lever in, out, neutral. Didn't really notice it in neutral with rpm up above 2000 either. But it is DEFINITELY noticeable underway when revs get above 2000, and it's definitely a left side noise. My wife even asked WTH is that noise? Auto-tensioner looked ok when my indy installed the SE comp. Indy replaced a "seal" when he reinstalled the inner primary due to a leak that I wasn't aware of. Well, I still have the chatter and I still have the leak but a least I have ruled out the compensator.
I just went through this. She sits in a shop blown up.
The chatter was a rod knock and I had 2 fellow riders ride my bike and thought it was the primary.
What's the oil look like. Pull the crank sensor by the oil filter and look for metal.
Just read your post. I have a similar trip planned for September so I hope to avoid the rental car ride home. Hoping to get this sorted out before we go.
