I know where my gauge normally reads, if it differs more then where it usually is I know something is not right, like last week it was higher then normal with my hi beam on, I checked and my hi beam was out, they are not going to read exactly right, is just a reference point, like Mike said, check it at the battery running with a volt meter to see what you are really getting.

I'm reminded of my time as a trainee engineer, when we were taught that if a warning light comes on, the only thing of which we can be certain is that the bulb works! Same applies to the voltmeter, as already suggested. If it changes, check to see what is actually going on!

That's true and again I don't use the gauge to know exactly how much voltage is there. They're only good for spotting strange numbers like you say.

It just annoys me every time I look at it being so far off.

If it is high it may be possible to get it to read closer to what it should be, by using a small resistor. May be worth experimenting.....

An analog gauge is linear with respect to voltage. Usually there is a small inscription at the bottom of the gauge stating the voltage req'd to drive the needle full scale. If you feel the need, remove the existing wiring from the gauge and connect an adjustable power source (ie, pot) that will allow you to accurately adjust the driving voltage to full scale (needle) deflection. Where on the scale the needle is driven to would indicate how far out your calibration (wrt gauge) is.

Hell, I don't think it's worth all that trouble, My old flhtc's gas gauge was off a tad, I just got used to it and fueled accordingly (wqas glad I had a reserve though)

All HD gauges are just "relative" indicators, not precision instruments. There isn't a single one of the gauges, with maybe the exception of the tach, that are accurate on most bikes.

One would think that in the year 2013, environmentally sealed accurate gauges could be manufactured for these bikes. It's all about HD profit margin. It's actually pathetic.
