I put a new starter clutch in my bike. I tested it with the primary cover off and it appeared to work fine. The starter enaged, the motor started, then the starter gear disengaged as expected when I released the starter button.
I have the bike all buttoned up now and when I start the bike it works fine. But when I turn the bike off I hear a new sound like gears meshing around the primary area (a lower pitched whirrrr I guess you could call it) as the engine comes to a stop. It is bearly auditable, and may have been there forever.
But now this is making me paranoid that the starter clutch is not retracting after it starts the motor. I have not ridden the bike, but is there a way to check this without having to remove the primary cover again?
I guess I am afraid the if I ride the bike with the starter gear enaged it will blow up on me when riding.
It is not clear to me if you are hearing something "spin down" after the engine comes to a complete stop or if this is a new noise you hear while the engine is running. If the starter drive were staying engaged with the ring gear, it can not spin the starter, that is what the starter clutch prevents and the little gear that engages the ring gear would stop when the engine stops, no "spin down". If you have a new noise while the engine is running, I have no suggestions on figuring that one out. If you think the starter is staying electrically activated while the engine is running, try pulling the trigger wire off after the engine is running and see if the sound changes or if there is a spark as the wire separates from the tab. Hopefully, your guess about new paranoia is the correct one and everything is working as it should be. Have you checked to make sure the starter is properly seated against its mount, that it isn't cocked slightly one way or another?
Well, I didn't start it up with the primary cover off, I just tested the starter.
Thanks btsom, It mush have just been the engine "spin down". I pulled off the clutch inspection cover and was able to observe with a flashlight that it was not hung up and was engaging and disengaging normally. Rode it all day Saturday with no issues.
