Default Road King Classic Mods - Baffles & Bars

Well, it didn't take me too many miles to figure out that the stock handlebars on my RKC had to go.. I'm about 6'3" and go 250 lbs. I felt like I was reaching down for the grips, and my hand and elbow would ache a bit after 20-30 miles. So.... I ordered the Heritage style bars (p/n 56902-08). I think the cops use these and the reviews have been pretty favorable. I'll probably have the dealership install them since I'm not much of a mechanic type.

I also ordered the fork deflectors (p/n 58121-85B) and the air baffle (p/n 58520-79TC) - both in chrome. Hoping this helps a bit with the wind buffeting. I really don't want to change out my windshield. I like the looks of it..

Now I'm thinking about grips. I saw some in the dealership that look pretty nice, and they have that lever thing on the end which looks pretty comfortable. They're called "Kuryakyn Premium ISO grips with Boss." Anyone have these?

I am similar to your size. You will like the Heritage-Style bars. Make sure you pull them back to get the right wrist angle. But DON'T pay the dealer $300 to install them (I think that's what they quoted me.) It is a very easy install even for those not mechanically inclined. Here is a step by step illustrated how-to. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...road-king.html

I put H-D Get-A-Grip magnum grips on mine. I have big hands and they are very relaxing because you don't have to grip so far.

I have the ISO grips with throttle boss on my RK, I don`t have cruise on my bike so the boss is very useful.

Yeah, $85/hour and the parts guy said 3-4 hours. That's pricey for sure. I'm not all thumbs but I'm no mechanic either. I saw that thread a couple days ago. Doesn't look too terribly difficult, but I'd hate to have a pile a chrome and bolts on my garage floor scratching my head...

Did you put your grips on as well?

Yes. It is ALL very easy and you will be satisfied having done it.

I can see where that boss would be comfortable even at lower cruising speeds. The stock grips are super uncomforable for my big hands. I wear a 3X glove.

With cruise control, you don't really need the boss. Try the Magnums. Great size and shape for guys like us with big hands.

Will do. I'll put them on order.

Now, if I have a giant pile of parts in my garage.... You need to come over to Texas and help me put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

You'll be surprised at how easy it all goes together. Harleys are built with the idea that folks will work on them themselves. Read all the way through the instructions thread. A few of us had little tweaks that made a couple steps easier. Then report back here after you've done it (with some photos).
