Default My shoulders kill

So the wife and I rode to downtown Nashville from Illinois with some friends to do some partying this weekend. We ended up doing about 1000 miles in two days of riding on a three day trip. Long story short on our way home my upper shoulder muscles right at the bottom of my neck were killing me. I have plans to get some 10'' mini apes for my bike (2013 sg). I feel if the bars were higher it would be a better fit for me but will it actually make it more comfortable for the longer hauls? It seems like right now with the stock bars being as low as they are I hold my shoulders up rather than being able to hang my arms from the bars if that makes since? So if anyone can tell me if the taller bars helped with anyone elses similar issues I may get this done sooner than later. I was looking at yaffe monkey bars or maybe some prime apes. thanks

Try to sit on some bikes (preferably ride), and see what you think is comfortable. I'm 5'6 and find 14" & 16" apes to be very comfortable!!

Do you have a backrest? That will take some weight off of your upper body (you aint hanging on the bars as much) Night and day diff.

This is the method I used, we then took measurements and proceeded from there.
Definitely don't buy apes with our first measuring...

There is no doubt that different bars may help, but on the other hand we weren't meant to have our arms in that position for hrs. at a time either,it's gonna take it's toll on your shoulders and neck.Keep a bottle of ibuprofen on your bike and take a dose before you ride and as needed during and after,it will help a lot.

DO you wear a helmet? Do you have a windshield? This probably has more to do with your head and the wind than the position of your arms. Also, if you're not used to riding hundreds of miles a day that can be a factor.. that and not being 25 anymore.

My 12" apes and then my detachable backrest were the two best mods to eliminate lower neck/shoulder pain.
