Letting it warm up for a minute is a good thing and won't hurt anything ... Now on the EVO's it's highly suggested that you let them build a bit of heat before taking off ... This will keep the cylinder base gaskets from developing leaks.

I just let it idle a minte or so to let the pressures stabilize and give a quick listen to ensure I don't hear something strange, then I have about a .7 mile run at 20 mph speed limit through the subdivision then it's do what I want time.

Dude, get real. You have forged pistons and you better be warming those up.... or that top end will need replaced at some point.

Start n' go. Nice fast idle gets me thru the park and to the street with no low speed surging.

I start it and I'm off. I don't really know what you're "supposed" to do. My last bike, that I had for 17 years, was a Ducati with carbs, so I always had to take it easy until I got out of the neighborhood. Once I did that it was warm enough to push in the choke and away I went. So on my Road King I still take it easy until out of the neighborhood, then I tear it up. There is no logic to it; it's just habit.

I'd love to hear an authoritative source on the "right" or recommended way to do it.

I let mine idle for a minute or two. New or not, it's still an internal combustion engine and needs to come up to operating temperature before you take off. I see people in the parking garage at work just hit the starter button and as soon as their thumb releases the button, they are stopping it into gear and roaring off.

I've never really thought about the warm up before.
Let see here. Start the bike, pull in the clutch, put it in gear.
Ah, 2 seconds.
