Well, after 4 months, I finally found something to complain about on my 07 Ultra Classic. The headset cord is just to short. It keeps coming out. Anyone know if HD makes a longer than stock cord? I have tried stretching it, but the darn thing has a good memory and seems to go back to the orginal length.
Thanks.
BTW, still grinning from ear to ear when riding my first Harley!
When I purchased the headset kits for my wife's helmet and mine the cord that came with one of the sets was about a foot longer. Don't know why, just was. Anyway, I use the longer cord for my helmet and she, who's much shorter then me, uses theshorter one and it works out great. Maybe check with your dealer and see if they can look into why there are longer ones available. Who knows, maybe HD puts longer ones in new stock and I got one from new stock and one from old stock.
Do yourself a favor - either zip-tie that cord to the helmet side, or replace it with a different style - it WILL pull out and eventually ding yer tank!
I had the same problem with my 07s cord....my fix was quick/simple.
The cord itself is pretty pliable...just stretch it out by hand, almost like you are trying to turn the coiled cord into a straight one. I did that the entire length a few times, bingo, took care of the too short problem.
Definatly attach the cord to the helmet side securely. I wrap mine around so that it exits the rear of the mount, then added a zip tie. This way the cord comes from behind my ear, and not across my face.
Stretching the cord was also a must, I strectched it out and held it stretched with a couple of clamps. After a few days, it stayed in place. It still has coils, but it doesn't pull on me. Be careful that it doesn't over stretch...I knew how much longer I needed, and stretched only an inch or 2 beyond that.
Stretch it out to a little longer then you need it, take a hot blower dryer to it to get the coating to relax. Keep it in that position until the coating has had time to cool completely.
Good feedback from you folks. Thanks. I tried the headset for the first time this past weekend and felt like my head was being pulled to the left. I'll try the heat and see if that works.
Now I really don't understand why HD includes only 1 headset on a bike designed with an intercom. The second heatsets are #$# expensive. I met a fellow Harley owner who said he has a couple of headsets left over from previous bikes (he buys a new Ultra SE every year) and I can have one for half price. Is that worth it or should I just dump the HD set and buy a JM?
Buy it from your friend. If youre wanting to be heard byothers for the CB, the HD set is the onlyway to go, J&M's mic is not very audiable. There is another thread on this. If youare into music and want superior sound quality to your ears, then J&M only. BTW, they (J&M)havetwo versions, one cost way more than theother with Bose type speaker quality. The cheaperone is no better than the HD, IMHO.
