the other day i was leaving work. it was one of those days when gas prices were just a little higher. anyway wanted to take a peak to see if i should risk the ride home without stopping. when i looked in i happened to notice..... yes, a little bit of rust and some bubbling on the bottom. i figure it probably was caused by storage from before I bought it since it has had gas in it since i got it. called the dealer, they said they would probably have to trade out the tank. thinking it will probably take them a week to two weeks before i see it again. CHECK YOUR TANK!!!!
You should check with a radiator repair first before replacing the tank. The damage you refer to is probably from water in the gas which sinks to the bottom of the tank when it is stored. Always clean your tanks out to make sure to eliminate the water and you'll have far less problems all the way around.
Another way to avoid moisture n the fuel tank is to keep if full as much as possible, I never store my bike empty, If its gonna sit for more than a couple of days I top off the tank, If the tank is full of gas, there is no room for condensation or moisture, however this wont help if the gas is of poor quality and has water in it.
You should top off your fuel tank everytime you go out for a ride before you end your ride, so it has a full tank when you park it. A partial filled tank will sweat and rust right thru. I've seen tanks rot through in a single season.
I thought 05 tanks were made from material that should resist corrosion.
I agree. I thought that 2003 and newer tanks were lined with some anti corrosion liner. At least that is what I was told. I heard it from a guy that got a dent in his tank and said he couldn't just repair it, but had to replace it because it cracked the liner inside and pieces of it would get in the fuel.

hey guys I've had other tanks lined by my local gas tank repair shop. They were old tanks with lots of rust, but had no problem afterwards
one time I saw several Harley tanks there and he told me that they line lots of Harley tanks for rusting(both new& old). I have already decided to line my 04 RK Custom tank, but will have to check on previous lining.
