OK here is the Pictures of the 2001 Screaming Eagle CVO Road Glide I told you guys about. I have been driving the heck out of this bike since I purchased it and I really like the bike. There is a few things I would like to change but I truly do not think it would be worth it. I thought about putting in a 6 speed transmission ($3000), getting the paint restored and upgrading the audio system but by the time I do all that I might have been just better off trading it on for a new model. So here is some pics. You guys tell me what you think of my find. I still would like to upgrade the audio system. Anybody have any suggestions where I could find a radio to fit that has a MP3 plug?
Nice, I didn't know they did a CVO version of the SERG.
I borrowed one of those ( Blue/Blue) for a long ride in Saskatchewan. Fun.
That has the 95", you could throw in a 6 speed, but I don;t know if you would have the power to use it ( and a 6 speed can be MUCH less than 3k) there are 2 types of 6 speeds, close ratio where 6th is the same as old 5th ( 1.00) and the other 5 gears are used to get to speed faster..... and overdrive 6th gear, usually .86.
there are other ways to get an overdrive...replacing the stock 70T pulley with a 61T gets you about the same .86 final, but requires a belt swap to a softail belt.
or a swap to a 65T pulley ( 40315-94) will give a 7% overdrive...but you need to have about 3/4" room left on your adjusters to take up slack. you may also have to loose the belt guard.
There are also front pulley options but these require pulling the primary, primary drive, clutch etc.
as for the audio on many of my older vehicles, I use an FM Modulator ( $100 or less).
you plug your device into the modulator ( ipod, xm radio..etc.) and then the FM modulator is wired between the antenna and the radio.
when you want to listen to mp3, turn on radio and tune to the frequency on the modulator.
Cheapest 6 speed trans I could find is around $2400. Changing out the pulley could be a option. On the other hand I could just leave it alone and drive the **** out of it. It runs great even though I’m I’m looking for another gear at 80MPH LOL..
I forgot about the FM Modulator.. I will give that a try..Though I would like to put a more modern audio system in it.
Nice bike! I'd ride the $hit out of it. A couple of grand buys alot of gas and cheap motel rooms.... I'd pass on the tranny upgrade. Also, I've tried several FM modulators in my truck and never had very good luck with them but the belkin modulator worked the best.
It runs great even though Im Im looking for another gear at 80MPH LOL..
If you had a six-speed you would still be looking for another gear! I've owned bikes with 3, 4, 5 and 6 speeds and looked for another gear on every one of them. It does not mean you NEED a 6-speed! Ride on.....
I'd do the following:
#1 Give it a clay bar & polish & wax job
#2 Find a take out HK radio and install
#3 Address any comfort issues. (seat/bars/grips)
#4 Filler up
#5 Ride
I would recommend a biketronics retro radio kit with a stereo receiver thathas Bluetooth or USB connectivity for an mp3 player. I JUST bought (last Friday) the same bike asyou and the previous owner installed this kit with a Sony TuneTray receiver. I can put my iphone INSIDE the stereo andplug it into the integraded 30 pin connector and control the playback with thehandlebar controls. There is also a USBconnector inside and at the moment I just have a USB flash drive hooked to itwith a couple hundred songs on it - that way I can just leave the drive insideinstead of taking the phone in and out.
Forget the 6speed I keep looking for another gear no matter what bike I'm riding lol. On a serious note though, the head unit could be upgraded easily.
Also skip the clay bar and go straight for Meguiars Ultimate Compound followed up with the Meguires Black Wax. Takes time but well worth it. Make sure you have a good DA (dual action polisher/sander) I picked mine up at Harbor Fright.
Best of luck remember with the RG not offered this year might get a hell of a good trade at least worth poking around & finding out what sort of deal you might get.
