Default sudden fuel milage loss

hello guys I need a little help here. 2008 roadking with slip on's and all stock besides that. I have noticed this past week that my fuel mileage has been down, I was riding to work (12 miles away) and when I left the house my remaining mileage said 65mi and when leaving work going back home my mileage was at 44mi left. so as im going home outside temp was in the low 70s cause it just rained a little and look down and its in the 20-25mi range. I wasn't hot rodding around either. so today I looked and I had about 70mi left and I decided to throw 10 buck of gas in, after doing so I'm about to get on the freeway and see that the milage is at 213miles left. about 6 miles down the road I look down again (cause it bugs me knowing that mileage is poor) and it now says that I'm at 174mi left. this is driving me nuts! I know when I come to a stop sign or a stoplight that I do have to use my brakes to slow me down so I know that my brakes and wheel bearings aren't hanging up to cause the mileage change, and the bike feels like it has not lost any power either. what do you think it may be?

I got the bike last November and have loved it, but im new to all the electronics on it seeing that my other two bikes are carbureted.

any help would be great!

thanks guys!

Barnabie

Default Is This Thread For Real?

Seriously, or are you just yanking our chain? FORGET about all those fancy buttons and calculating gizzmos and just ride the bike! When you go to a gas station FILL IT UP. Anything less than full (ie $10 worth) is wasting your time and money. The only MPG calculation that meens anything is what you actually get. This meens total miles ridden divided by total gas consumed.

And if this thread is for real, just have a nice day.

this is a real thread, my question is how come the miles left meter is fluctuating so much on a 12 mile ride. I never saw it move that much (20miles of fuel consumed in a 12 mile ride) ever before. I know how to calculate fuel mileage but the meter is whats bothering me. don't be a dick.

I apologize. I didn't mean to be a dick. The electronics are EXTREMELY inaccurate and finiky, or possibly yours are in the process of breaking?

This is an assumption but I think the mileage is based more on your current driving more than an overall average during a tank of gas. For example, when I leave home, I have 7 miles of stop lights and stop and go, 20 miles of interstate and then 5 miles of stop lights. I can leave and the estimate shows 100 miles to empty, stop for gas and then it jumps up (the MPG) because of highway driving. When I leave for home and look at it after the stops lights, I've lost 40 miles from the range like someone took a gallon from my tank. If I stop mid trip after being interstate, it jumps right back up.

I figure about 230 if I am doing most highway / freeway / interstate without much change in speed. I figure 190 if I am in the city stop and go. I keep an eye on my trip odometer, fuel gauge and the yellow idiot fuel light.

I can`t get past throwing $10 worth in the tank. Maybe other people do that too and i`m just a dick. Just fill it up and check your mileage. That`s the only way to know if your`re losing mileage.

Check your tires. My rear tire was low and didn't know it. That'll kill of some mpg's in a hurry.

I go the other extreme. I'm the guy bouncing the bike to remove air pockets so that I can the .3 gallons more in the tank. I hate the newer style tanks with those plastic inserts.

oh ok that makes a little more sense, I would have never thought that it would adjust to highway driving and city (light to light) driving..... I think that may be what it is....

yes that is it. Think in terms of how you rode that last 5 minutes, it computes that usage for what is left in the tank, continuously. It is a guide. hold the grip steady and go further, twist it often and not so far. That is why it jumps around
