I have to ride over 5 miles on a gravel road to get my cabin in the woods.

At 800+ LBS, if you are not careful with the front brake while making a slow (parking lot speed) turn, you will go down.
Physics and Gravity working against you. With the bars turned and you try to stop that front wheel from turning, the weight of the bike is going to try and pull you down.

At any speed over 20 MPH, then this isn't so much of an issue as long as you have front tire traction.

Linked brakes allow for slow speed rear brake applied turns. I think they'll work perfectly.

Never purpasely lay the bike down to avoid an accident. Laying the bike down is an accident, and it is definetly an out of control situation that does little to reduce speed.
Proper braking technic is to brake as hard as you can without locking either of you tires while scrubbing off as much speed as you can, then taking evasive action.
Linked abs brakes shine in this situation.

You're preaching to the choir here. "I had to lay 'er down" translates into, "I wrecked because I had no idea how to avoid it".

Yes, in some sections up to 45mph, there is a 1.5 miles section of relative straight road.
