Mine's been doing this forever, I have a 2000 road king. replaced cams and tensioners earlier this year, push rods and all looked just fine. I believe what it is is the rockers have some side to side play and are making noise, and should be shimmed. I'm gonna pull my rocker boxes off after I park for the winter and check it out. With mine, the noise seems to come primarily from the left side in the top end. As you said, runs strong, no issues other than the noise. I don't let it concern me much.
Yeah, ya know the thing that keeps the stand from leaking. He means the up stop pad where the stand rests against the frame when you are riding. If it falls off, you have metal against metal with the jiffy stand spring providing the "elastic" force against the up-stop. At least on my Road King, the little pad is on the stand, not on the frame and is held in place by a rubber plug that must be forced through a hole slightly smaller than the rubber plug or button. The actual pad is a little bigger than a penny. If that is what you need, a new one should be a little under $100 from the dealer, somewhere around $1.50 I would think.
aint no rubber stopper its still there,,however it does the same thing at a standstill in neutral,,put a stethoscope on it ,I can hear primary turning,,all moving parts in cylinders, however front top end louder than rear, hmmmm,,,
so I took the comp nut off and re applied red loctite and torqued to 160 lbs,,seal er up tommorrow, and hopefully that gets rid of the noise,,process of elimination
..if it's inside a cylinder...could be a wrist-pin bushing. They disintegrate over time from a lean condition...then you start to get piston slap, which sounds like a rattle...happened to my buddy with his 99 RK...chased the sound all summer, finally tore it down in my garage, the bushing is brass...and it was almost 50% gone...luckily that soft of a metal doesn't hurt the motor...had to split the cases to replace connecting rod..ugh..
