Using this photo as an example, what I'm wondering is how the chrome strip under the windshield (where the three screws are that hold the shield in place) would look. Whether the vent would look better or worse with it. And what a black strip would do for the looks (I don't think Harley sells that piece in black).

I don't think chrome would help it but I'm not a chrome kind of guy.Black would match the vent and not look too bad but I also think it looks OK as is.

I am curious about all this talk of buffeting. I am 6'3", and never had a buffeting problem on my Ultra. Is this when people have short windshields? Why not have a bigger windshield or an electric adjustable windshield instead of that hideous vent?

I was beat to hell by the buffeting on my Vulcan 750/Hellfire windshield. I took my beating like a man because I didn't like the looks of a big windshield. I wonder if some people complaining about buffeting, are really just experiencing wind.

For me the buffeting on the street glide was far worse than riding my road king without any shield at all. It felt like my head was in one of those paint can mixers at Home Depot. Like I said in an earlier post, I'm sure I could have solved the problem but I just didn't give it enough time. I actually sold the street glide for a BMW R1200RT which had an electronic shield. Raising it up and feeling the wind completely go away was amazing. Unfortunately to me it wasn't nearly as enjoyable as riding a Harley so I went back to a road king. Many people have posted that the vent works well but they don't like the looks of it. So other than having it match the bike color (which is obviously the answer), I was just wondering what else could be done to the fairing to make it look better for those who don't like it.

The same vent comes on the Windsplitter screen for the Road King. Does a great job of reducing turbulence at highway speeds. For extra wind protection on an RK you might also consider adding fairing lowers and National Cycle hand guards.

I too think some people confuse the buffeting issue.
I have a 2012 SG stock windshield.
But I have the frame drop kit. lowers seat 3" and comes with a custom Corbin seat.
I get no buffeting and I hear my stock radio just fine at any speed.
I think with the right combo of seat and windshield the buffeting can be eliminated.
And of course all of this is my own opinion....

Ive got the vent on my amber whiskey and the vent really does a nice job for the buffeting effect. On mine its a black piece on a large part of the orange but it does really bother me like its to me it doesnt look out of place. I have been thinking about color matching the inner fairing to match and if i do i might paint the vent to match as well.

The Vent Is Awesome! You might not like the way it looks but it functions perfectly. I'm 6'1" and I had to use a 12" recurve shield on my streetglide to manage the turbulant wind. On my 14 Limited the stock 10" shield is even better when the vent is open.

While riding at 50 or 60 or 70 I can close the vent and feel a significant change with airflow and turbulance. Close the vent and everything smooths right out. I love it and I actually think it looks good but my bike is black.

My .02

I wish the vent flipped open on the outside instead of being in the tunnel. That way when closed, it would deflect bugs and when open, well who care. Also, it would have been much easier to color match.

Seems to me it will be a pocket for water to collect. Perhaps the color matched accessory should be a hood that hides it, yet lets the wind blow in your face. Maybe like a small air cleaner cover.
