Default Sticker shock

Just replaced my front brake pads. This time I did the wrenching and it was fairly easy. Cost of OEM pads at the Dealer ? $112.00 for 4 pads. I could have saved some bucks by purchasing on ebay but, I wasn't sure about the quality. Lyndall, Goodridge, DP, sintered, Kevlar, ceramic, etc. Is there a good alternative to OEM ? I did notice quite a bit of brake dust on the calipers so I used brake cleaner and wiped it off. Next time, what should I look for ?

Just out of curiosity, how many miles did you get out of the original set? For that matter, what kind of riding do you do (local, highway)?

There are lots of threads on this site about different brake pads. Search and read for hours :-)

Lyndall has a pretty good write up about servicing brakes --

http://www.lyndallbrakes.com/service-tech/

So does Motorcycle Metal --

http://www.motorcyclemetal.com/Download8.html

Just download the PDF (save link as...) and you can take it to the shop or garage.

Hope this helps.

Thanks FreddyP, I'll do some reading. My riding is both local and highway. I've got 21,000 miles on this bike and it's the second set of pads. I'm averaging 10,000 miles or so. I actually could have gotten more mileage but, I wanted to keep from damaging the rotors. There was still some wear left in them.

I switched to EBC on my 883 and putting Lyndalls on the 1200 now, wheels still off. The EBCs sure stop better; the OEMs weren't worn bad, but the performance was terrible; new pads made it decent. Trying the Lyndalls on the other one to see if they're better/as good as the EBCs. Get the 1200 back on the road, and the Glide needs pads. All three in a year, hope that doesn't happen again. And the trail bike...

Carbon fiber, ceramic, kevlar, etc., all have different properties; google them and there's websites that explain the differences and you can choose what seems to fit your riding style and bike type best. Some claim really good racing performance; you probably don't want those, they give best performance when hot, and your average road rider should have the best cold grab for those half blind left turners - my opinion, anyway. That's why I went with carbon fiber. Some pads warn not to use on stock disks; read up on your choice and make sure they're compatible with your stock disks. Might sound complicated to make a choice, but some of the online stores have that information on each pad's page, should be easy enough to understand.

I have 28500 miles on my 09 Streetglide and my front bads still look good but did have to replace the rear pads recently when I installed my new tires. These are all the original pads. I to was surprised that the stock pads were almost $60 bucks. I might have gone aftermarket but did not realize they were bad until I was removing the wheels to get the new tires mounted.

Seriously, that's outrageous! Definitely need to shop around. That link above is living proof that the dealers are robbing us....

Harley pads as low as 10 bucks? No brand names given, would bet they're cheap chit from china. Like Harley OEM pads probably will be, if they aren't already. As long as they're available, I'll buy American regardless of cost.
