The air fork baffle (black) came stock on my 2000 Ultra and I replaced it with brand new chrome.
When I got my '13 CVO S/E Ultra, I knew I probably had the old black baffle somewhere but it was easier just to buy another chrome baffle and be done with it (besides, the chrome is prettier).
Well, wouldn't you know it, two weeks later I was putting some extra car stuff in the attic, and right there on top on a box of extra bike parts was the old black baffle!
It's now on my friends 2010 Ultra.
FWIW, I can't see any difference in engine oil temp with the air fork baffle installed. I also have the fork mounted wind deflector an same goes for them.
I had the adjustable Kuryakyn wind deflectors on the batwing fairing and I do believe that they did a better job of both deflecting wind from the rider and also of directing air flow back to the passenger in hot weather.
The only official documentation that I've seen regarding removing it in hot weather said it was for rider comfort not engine cooling. In hot weather, removing it allows more airflow to the rider, therefore seeming cooler.
Whether on or off, the same amount of air must pass by/thru the bike. You can either deflect the air up to the rider (remove it) or away from the rider ( install it). If deflecting away from the rider , the air has to go somewhere, given the curved shape, certainly appears the air will be deflected downward toward the engine.
For those that sent me a pm about the faring wings I posted, here is the link, the price has also been lowered to just over $30 delivered, they cured the buffeting for me. What I think makes the difference is the lower piece on the wing, it stops the air from hitting the tank, I tried the regular wings and these made a big improvement.
I'll post the page and exact info when I'm near my service book but it says to remove when temps are to be above a certain amount...
It's in there, and the older models (of the baffle) had it on the instructions as well. Also, "Donny's Unauthorized Technical Guide to Harley-Davidson" addresses it too.
I have it and the fork deflectors and the combination is great. Pretty calm back there now. I didn't notice any change in oil temps when I installed em both. I think if you don't like the buffeting, this combination is really good!
