Use a specific degreaser. It's basically kerosene in a spray can. It will not damage your engine paint as alkaline cleaners can.

I have a Allen wrench that has about 1/4 cut off the short end for intake bolts. I've tried most everything else, and this seems to work the best. It's slow, but it works.

How do you torque it with out being able to get a socket on it?

Change the bolts so it's not Allen head when you put it back.

I was told to use brake cleaner or simple green on a cold engine and wash off.

I use a ball end Allen wrench, works fine. So far...

By knowing what the correct torque feels like. After you've torqued a million + bolts in your life as I have, you get a feel for it. Yes, the ball end Allen wrench will work once you break them loose. A ball end Allen has a tendency to wallow out a Allen bolt if you try to break it loose from tight.

I've done that as well, it's not significantly easier when it's time to get a wrench on them.
