I agreethat the cop bikes are probably better maintained than most, I am on my 2nd cop bike. The first was an EG and now I have a RK that I purchased for $9877.00 with 20k miles. As another rider stated, I will never look back. Great bikes.
I have put 40K on my '04 police EG including three Iron Butts (at least a 1K miles in 24 hours or less) and consider 500 miles on the slab without rain to be an easy ride--the police bikes are no better or worse than any other touring bike ride-wise if they have the civilian tires and seat. With the cop air-ride seat, it is better, just not as attractive to my eye.
My brother just bought one off ebay and we're driving to Henderson, NV (from Washington) on Tuesday to pick it up. It's a 2001 Road King Police and the owner advertised it as having never beenused by a law enforcement agency.
I'm looking forward to riding it some on the trip back since it's 45 degrees and raining sideways here in Washington and it's sunny and 85 degrees in Nevada. We'll ride it until the weather turns crappy and trailer it the rest of the way home.
I bought an 01 flhrpi (roadking)I Feb 2002 1200 miles on it.
I got rid of it after 49,000 for a new 06 flhtci.
I did one stator and I think 3 rear tires.
Ran great the whole time. No complaints.
Check them out well. See if the Dealer can tell you which agency had the bikes. I have watched ours. I got to see which bikes sat (supervisor bikes) and the other motor units that were on them all day long. Ours were maintained by the dealer as close to the service intervals as possible. I could have gotten one turned in with less than 500 miles, but I missed that one. There are several items to contend with--- The bags with the hockey puck closure, the ABS system, the black necelle and the Light controls. If the price is right jump all over it. Obviously Bill Rucker stumbled onto something, look at the Rucker editions that he is selling for over $25,000.

My HD guru has a Perewitz FLHTPI bike for sale in his shop...22 grand.... detailed Dave Perewitz paint job, PM wheels/calipers, bike has been raked and it has an aftermarket front end
the bike needs nothing but a new home.... if anyone is in the Boston area and is interested get in touch. The perfect example of the blank canvas theory
I love mine. I got an 04 road king in dec 05 when it came off lease. It had 17000 miles and cost just under $16ooo. I love the air suspension seat. I added the h-d sundowner back rest to my seat by welding in the receiver braket to the seat frame. it works great. I added second seat and removable backrest and rack.
It is black and white and I've kept the color scheme. Nobody wants to pass the black and white motorcycle and people do occassionally pull over if I come up on them in the fast lane of the freeway.
I LOVE mine. 05' $13300 last sept - 137 miles only
HD mods prior : new fiberglass bags (the ones on it were scratched), they change the run flats to dunlops cause the run flats are not rated for 2 up. new HD headlight.
They had others with the 2 up screaming eagle seats and boards and a stage one already. but that was like $18k.
I have added some cosmetic and a pass seat and floor boards and minor chrome touches and would be happy with this for years!!! however, already have a list of other mods i want to do next
btw - I love my air ride seat! I dont see me changing it anytime soon.
ditto, on what others are saying. I have a 2001 EG police that was used by the Raleigh NC police dept. Ray Price HD did all the service work and I have a copy of all of the repair invoices. Nothing major, a stater, handgrips, and the usual required maintenance. Plus I LOVE THE POLICE STYLE SADDLEBAGS. I have added fairing lowers and a tour pack, so bacically i have a ultra without the cruise and intercom. If you opt for a 2003 or newer you can add the cruise from HD. The EFI was changed and now HD offers a kit with all the creuise parts in one box. If i ever decide to get or ever need another bike i will definately look at the police EGs first. Plus they already have the fender bumpers, and saddlebag rails, and the black/chrome engine. I had mine repainted from birch white to vivid black and got most of the addons from ebay. I have about 2500$ woth of chrome and pipes on the bike, but even with that and the tourpack, fairing lowers, etc, I still have 5K less than a ultra.
