Default Used Police Bikes...

Used Police Bikes:
Clapped out money pits?
Or
Well maintained cream puffs?

A local Indy always seems to have one or more in stock.
Example: 05 Road King 15k miles, $12,900.00
I'massuming it isstock besides solo seat and bag latch mods.
What other mods do the Po Po routinely do, if any?

I feel I got a good deal on my 2000 FLHTPI. I bought it when it was two years old with 7000 miles for $12,900. It has run me good except for normal wear parts for the last 5 years. If I was to do it over again I would look at another off lease police bike.

Usually great buys I bought my 2003 in 2004 with 8000 miles for 13,500.00. you usuallywant to pay the Harley tax plus add rear floorboards and seat if you are going to ride 2 up, but that's what eBay is for. not all police bikes are white or black with a little effort (driving ) you can find one in another color and in the price you want to pay. always check cycletrader online keyword police. but imho they are good buys.

Most dealers put a 2 up seat and new rubber on them. that should also include the passenger floorboards and brackets. Running 2 up on run flats is a no no according to the MoCo and there is a sticker on the rear fender of the bike telling you so.

For the last few years there has been little difference except for the charging system between a EG standard and a FLHTPI. That all changed in 07 when the police bikes are 103 CI and the civilian bikes are 96. Whole different ballgame now as far as value as the heavy work has been done..just cam and pipe it and you are good to go.

Try to find out what agency had the bike and then go over to that city and find a donut shop. A motor officer will wander by soon and you can ask him what kind of use the bikes got.

IMHO they are a blank canvas. I got mine with 4000 miles on it and have converted it to a 03 FLHTCI clone. Granted I got mine for free so it was easy to justify the expense, but have an idea what you are going to do to the bike, and if it is cheaper to go buy that bike or build it from a P spec bike. It is easy to go upside down adding chrome, radio, guages, PCIII, tour pack, etc.

I bought an '04 police model with 4,750 miles for $13,750 in Feb. '05; it was a lease return from a motor escort company. It's been a terrific bike; a "blank canvas" as said earlier.

If you purchase from the original leasing dealer you should be able to get the service record on the bike. Also, '05 was the first year HD offered the police model with ABS brakes. It's a nice feature but the unit is mounted on the right side of the bike and to accommodate it the right saddlebag was reshaped causing a loss of storage in that bag.

If you shop around, you can find them in colors other than white or black. Check-out the HD website under Police models and it gives a list of the available colors under "color palette."

And the police models come with the same MOCO 2 year, unlimited mileagewarranty that the civilian bikes have.

I was wondering about these bikes too. I was at the dealre today thinking of trading my 1200R for a BT (ST standard or WG) and they brought up these bikes as another option. They just bought 12 I think they said rangin from 03-06 and 2500 -8000 miles ranging from $12-14k. Im going back Tuesday to test drive one and see how they ride, not sure I need this big of a bike but it sounds like they can be a great deal and perfect for customizing. So how are they for putting alot of miles on in a day?

Plain white is the toughest of the cop colors to like on a RK with black nacelle & side covers. Although I've seen some that were nicely done.

Police duty bikes aren't babied while on the job but most are better maintained than used civilian bikes. You might find some scuffs from the cop stuff especially around the rear fender.Bikes used for escort are often the Officer's personal property and aretreated accordingly.

Like the others have said, police bikes are a great deal if you plan on the blank canvas approach to personalization.

Lightngsvt: the police air-ride is meant to get an Officer a full shift in the saddle so its very comfortable - just not very pretty to most. Police touring bikes are the same as the civilian models in that they are intended for all-day mileage (150 miles on mine this afternoon - wanted icecream)

our local dealer, takes the bikes and completely re works them. they look awsome. install std lids on the bags, new seats, and repaints them. they did one if flat black that looked really sharp. as a matter of fact i looked at it really hard before deciding to purchase a new street glide. the dealer should be willing to work with you on these changes.

I climbed off an 883 onto my flhrpi and will never look back. great bike whether I am running 2 miles down the road to walmart or clear across the country. it actually handles as well if not better than my old sporty and 2 up there is no comparison.
