Default New Grips For Road King

Picked up some new grips, read some prior threads and the service manual but I'm still unclear on one aspect. I understand that the top covers for the swich housings( left and right handlebar) must be removed but these appear to be held on by a single screw on top and bottom.

Some threads reference a need to first shim the brake lever and loosen the handlebar mounting screws on the clutch and brake sides before removing the switch cover plates. Is that required on a throttle by wire to simply replace the grips or is that part of a larger job like swapping out the bars or repairing the wiring?

I realize its a basic question and yes I do have a service manual but I don't want to damage something. Besides the brake switch someone else had mentioned damaging another switch related to cruise control that they were not aware of so I want to take the simplest route.

Thanks in advance.

On a TBW, just take out top and bottom screws on switch housing and slide grip in place. You might have to move housing in or out so grips will fit flush to end for gear to engage correctly. I left a little play (1/8") so nothing will bind. Then adjust lever perch if needed so it's flush with switch housing.

It's actually simpler than stated.

Yep, what you are talking about (OP) is for bar replacement and completed taking apart the controls. Only then is the "shim" a needed issue for the brake caliper so far as I know. And I know because I screwed mine up when replacing my bars on my last bike. haha.

ALWAYS...ALWAYS...ALWAYS...shim or wedge the brake lever when opening the housing. If not and you manage to brake that POS front brake switch, you will be hating life. The part is cheap but is a PITA to replace unless you have elf hands. Shimming it takes about 10 seconds...
