Default Carb'd Touring Bikes-Winter Storage...

...wonder if most carb'd bike owners run their carbs dry for the winter month's storage or just shut off the fuel petcock??? The previous original owner of my carb'd '05 RoadKing used to just store it without even shutting off the fuel tank petcock. Just treated tonight's fill up after a 60mile cruise with Harley Ethanol Treatment(pink & looks like StaBil).

the float bowl has a drain, look at it from between the cylinders and you'll see a slot head screw in the side of the float bowl.
be prepared for a couple of OZ of gas on the floor, you can get a catch can under the drain tube, just follow it down.

turn off the petcock.

you don't need a puddle of gas in your garage, why risk it?

full gas is OK, but I prefer draining the tanks and allowing them to vent.
fresh gas when storage is done

I also shoot a little oil into the plug holes and turn the motor to spread it around

Like Mark said, if you don't ride it every couple of weeks, I would drain the bowl. It takes about 10 seconds and a mildly long screwdriver. Just shove a rag underneath to catch the gas (a couple of tablespoons worth). The fogging (oil in cylinders) is a good idea, but I usually only do that if I know the bike is going to sit quite some time or in a high moisture environment to prevent the walls from rusting/pitting.

I don't do anything to my Sporty since I ride it, but my other bikes get the bowls drained before the final storage.

It has the perk of forcing you to crank a little bit longer in the spring (to fill the bowls), which helps prime the oiling system before you fire it up the first time after storage.

I always filled the tank, added Stabil, shut the petcock and let it run until it stalled. Changed the oil and filter. By the time the oil change was done, it was cool enough to pull the plugs and add a couple ounces of oil. Spun the engine a few times with a rag over the plug holes, reinstalled the plugs, pulled the battery and put her to sleep covered with a sheet.
