Unexpected looooooong winter.
I know I need a new battery, and a ton of maintenance prior to firing it up. Is there any comprehensive guide or at least a thorough checklist somewhere out there that I can refer to?
I have my tools and Clymer, and I know I'm going to need to change all fluids, including the gas.
I was told that I should pull the plugs and drop some oil into the cylinders prior to sparking.
I was also told that this is not a good time to upgrade to synthetic oil, and keep to the standard for a while (Bike has 22,000 miles).
I am not a gearhead, but I have enough experience to get through this with the help of the manual.
Any advise? Thanks
Buy new battery,plugs,oils,fuel filter,oil filter.
Change the engine oil/filter at this time
Check the fuel lines.
Drain gas from tank and carb.
Remove the carb float bowl and check for signs of the gas gumming up.If the gas is gummed up you will need to rebuild the carb.Make sure all the gum is removed from the jets,etc-.Use compressed air to blow out all the passages.
Gummed up old gas can destroy the jets, needle and seat, rubber components.
If the carb looks ok,pour some fresh gas in the tank.Swish it around.Remove the fuel line and let the gas drain out to remove any old gas or crap thats in the tank.
Of course you could also remove the tank and do this, but its more work!
Replace the fuel filter.Put some fresh gas in the tank.
Remove the plugs and place 1-2 tablespoons of oil in each cylnder.
With the plugs removed, crank the engine over a few times.
Install the new plugs and fire it up!
After you get it running go for a ride.
Probly a good idea to change the oil and filter again when the engine is warm/hot.
Also change the primary and tranny fluid at this time.
