Default Low Fuel Light

2010 FLHTK. Ultra Limited

Took my tank off. Put my tank back on. Now the low fuel light comes on whenever it feels like it. The range countdown also starts.

Did it last weekend at 175 miles. Before that its done it at 37, 78, 90 miles. Today I turned it on and with 1.9 miles on the tank got the low fuel light.

I be confused. Dealership thinks it is the speedometer. They found a bare wire under the seat, repaired it but it didn't fix the problem. They think it might have caused a surge through the speedo. It was throwing a fault for the speedo but cleared itself. Its also thrown a fault for the fuel sensor but that cleared itself also.

Filled the connector under the seat with dielectric grease and thought it fixed the problem but it came back.

Parked it yesterday with about 125 miles on the tank and the low fuel light on from 1.9 miles.

Got on it this morning and the light is out. Checked the range left and it was 119 miles.

So zeroed the trip meter. Put 62 miles on it and the range left is down to 51 miles.

Low fuel light is still out.

Got back on this afternoon and I watched the range work work down to 37 miles where the low fuel light came on. That was about 205 miles on the tank.

I ran it down to the Low indicator and filled up.

Low fuel light stayed on. I flipped it to range and it showed 31 miles. I started towards home and watched the range indicator increase by 3 mile increments. Did 3 mile jumps till it got to 100 then did 2 mile increments. Was 23 miles home and range was 123 miles when I arrived.

I turned it off, waited and turned it back on. Low fuel light was out.

Range initially was 129 then switched to "---" then changed to 219. Low fuel light was still out.

I'm going to start watching the range indicator for now.

Question: Does all that calculation take place in the speedometer?

Try disconnecting the ECM overnight. I know the range is a learned parameter and somehow you're all dunked up.

Is the fuel level bouncing at all?

I know when changing from short rides to a road trip the range is wonky until about the third fill-up.

I've heard the fuel countdown to be in reliable and it did have me run out of gas 10 mi north of tonopah this summer. I was pissed but the headwind got me. I'll have spare fuel next time. The roadside guy spilt fuel all over my fuel tank. I waited ten minutes to evaporate before firing the motorcycle up.

I'm pro-fuel countdown. I use it and refuel when I'm 100 km (60 mi) remaining.

Hope my suggestion helps.

i'd suggest that when you had the tank off you got the float tangled up in a fuel line.

run the fuel level down as far as you can

then open up and have a look.

as much as we'd expect the computer to calculate how much fuel it sends to the motor, we still rely on a toilet tank float arrangement to measure the fuel in the tank.

Fuel gauge is working correctly.

Had another guy suggest the fuel sensor is dirty and to try cleaning it.

All options presented here are cheaper than replacing the speedometer so will give them a try first.

Stupid question but are you sure the connector under the dash panel that you had to remove to remove the tank is firmly plugged in?

I've had my tank off probably 6 times without any issues.

I took my tank off of my '10 Limited the day I brought it home to swap out bars. Took the tank off to run new brake line. I noticed afterwards that my fuel gauge runs all the way down to E before the light comes on and will only hold 4 1/2 gallons at that point. My 08 was pretty much spot on. Not sure if it was anything I did but I just figured it was a quirk I'd have to get used to with the new bike

After that reset above to range of 219 I parked it for 5 days. Turned it on and the range initially showed 213 then switched to "---" then "Lo" and the low fuel light came on.

Anything tangled shouldn't affect it. Dirty sensor shouldn't affect it.

I'm confused.
