What are you guys bitching about? this quality instrument on my UC works great, highly accurate and functional about 25%, uh 10% of the time!! First problem is learning siamize so you can read the bugger! After collecting 125 random sample data points, i analyzed and plotted the data to the 4th decimal point and found that, yes Virginia there is a temperature reading in that guage. The round white dots correspond to the odd 10s, example 50, 70, 90 degrees. So, sometimes the little POS is correct.
They are JUNK. HD only puts them in to fill that fourth hole in the fairing. We'd be better off if they put the cigarette lighter in that spot and I don't even smoke...Harley and their better ideas...[:'(]
..moved sensor position inside fairing.. drilled hole in metal brace that runs from near radio out toward left mirror at farthest point wire would easily reach,(did not have to cut and extend wires), moved sensor and air temp guage has beenaccurate on past three rides, checked with temp on bank at end of street and weather channel. Havn't had chance to check when it's really hot outside as weather won't cooperate.. only 60-70's here.Easy fix if you already have fairing off.

Doyou're self a favour.
Go to the DIY forums and find the one with the Wally's temperature guage instal. It's easy with the pictures and directions shown in here. The guy that made up the presentation was very thorogh and knowledgable. Made it real easy for a dummy like me.
It's true you don't need and oil temperature guage, but, I like the peice of mind from knowing what the engine temperature is.
If you switch to amzoil as i did, you will be able to see the difference and when you are stuck in traffic on a hot day you can watch what happens to your oil temperature.
A nice mod, IMO well worth the trouble.
Also, just this last week I installed a handlebar mounted HD temperature guage. Why not?
Air temp guage= P.O.S!!!! Might as well have a "sky color guage" or better yet, a is it sunny or cloudy guage. Can't believe the MOCO is so outta touch with their customers as to keep putting this cheap P.O.S. Guage on our bikes.I really think it's just a case of design arrogance. If our customers want a useful guage they'll buy one aftermarket.
It was the cheapest way to fill the hole. If you want to keep the gauge, simply move the sensor to a spot behind the steering head on the frame. It's reasonably accurate there. The MOCO stuck the sensor inside the fairing where it gets all the heat from the headlight(s), radio, etc. Pretty dumb. I merely painted the sensor black and siliconed it in place.
That gauge is crap crap crap, HD did not know what to do with that hole so they put in the cheapest think they could think of a temp gauge that TELLS YOU NOTHING. I use it for oil temp now.
Yeah, I see NO reason to have an ambient air temp gauge on a machine that has no doors!! Before I pick my Roadie up, I am having the Super Premium oil cooler and the oil temp gauge installed. Maybe I'll install the air temp gauge in my garage
If you get off the bike and look directly at the air temp gauge, you will see that the indicator needle covers "100" when it is actually pointing at "90"---- it is just the way they made the gauge.
I find the gauge most useful in the winter. If itindicates below 40, I watch for ice.
Yes, you can get some wild temp indications if you park a hot, black bike in the sun - but after a few miles it goes back to the normal "ball park" guess.
