Default Fairing Air Temperature Gauge

I have a question about my fairing air temperature gauge. I just bought my 2007 Classic, black in color. Today, in Charlotte, it was about 80 degrees. During my ride, my gauge was recording over 100. Is this gauge usually this inaccurate or is it a damaged gauge. Thanks for the help.

You are getting an accurate temperature reading of the inside of your fairing. The sensor is inside. Most swap it out for an oil temperature gauge.

Or there are threads about how folks have moved the sensor to the outside of the fairing with good results, but yes most swap it out for the oil temp gauge

How hard is it to put in the Oil Gauge?

It is a simple job. The HD gauge reqires you to install the sensor in an inline application that is very difficult to get at but is doable. Most sidestep this procedure and opt to install the sensor in the oil pan along side the oil drain plug. The Wally's gauge does the oil pan installation too.

The air temp gauge is really a POS mounted where it is. Moving it outside the fairing helps, but you will still pick up the engine heat almost anywhere you mount it.

I installed the Oil temp gauge and as others have said, mounting in the pan is the easiest, but being the sadist I am , I mounted the temp probe inline to the oil cooler. It is a reeeeeeal pain! HD instructions say to cut the oil line 2.12" from the end and splice the pickup in place, and they ain't kiddin. A little shorter or longer and the pickup either hits the frame or wont fit into place.

I am not real sure if the oil temp gauge is going to be all that useful, have ridden HD's a long time and never had an oil emp gauge before.....gee, wonder how I kept from overheaing the engine before, but I did install it just because as I said before, the air temp gaige is a POS.

I can't believe that you guys are considering removing the fairing air temp gauge! That is valuble information! Every self respecting Harley rider NEEDS to know their fairing air temperature! That must be a RUB mod....
